Chapter 7: The File With My Daughter’s Name

I opened the door.

And for a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The man standing outside looked familiar.

Not because I had met him before.

Because I had seen his face in old photographs.

He was older now.

His hair was gray around the edges. His expression was tired. His hands gripped a worn brown folder like it was the only thing keeping him standing.

“Marcus?””

I stared.

“Yes?””

He looked past me.

His eyes landed on Naomi.

Then on Jordan.

Then on the hallway where Lily’s bedroom was.

“I’m David.””

The name hit me.

David.

Claire’s father.

Lily’s grandfather.

The man who disappeared from our lives after Claire died.

The man I blamed.

The man I thought abandoned his own granddaughter.

“You have a lot of nerve showing up here,” I said.

His face tightened.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“You weren’t there.””

His eyes lowered.

“You’re right.””

“You missed birthdays.””

“I know.””

“You missed every Christmas.””

“I know.””

“You didn’t even call.””

His jaw trembled.

“I couldn’t.””

I almost laughed.

“Couldn’t?””

He looked at the folder in his hands.

“Because every time I tried, Vanessa stopped me.””

The anger inside me froze.

“What?””

David opened the folder.

Inside were dozens of papers.

Letters.

Printed emails.

Returned envelopes.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Some had my address.

Some had Claire’s name.

Some had dates from years ago.

“I sent letters,” David said quietly.

“Where did they go?””

“Back to me.””

“Why?””

He looked at me.

“Because the address had been changed.””

My stomach tightened.

“By who?””

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

Behind me, the front door opened.

Naomi stepped outside.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

She looked at David.

Then whispered:

“You found him.””

David nodded.

“I found what was left.””

That sentence bothered me.

“What does that mean?””

David looked toward the house.

“Can we talk inside?””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to tell him he didn’t get to walk back into Lily’s life after years of silence.

But then I looked at the folder.

And I knew.

Whatever was inside mattered.

We sat in the living room.

Lily was still asleep upstairs.

The house felt strangely quiet.

Like it was waiting.

David placed the folder on the table.

“I owe you an apology.””

I crossed my arms.

“You owe Lily one.””

His eyes filled.

“I know.””

That was the first thing he said that made me believe he understood.

Not defended.

Not explained.

Understood.

“I thought Claire left because of you,” David said.

My expression hardened.

“Excuse me?””

“She never told me the truth.””

Naomi looked down.

“Claire was scared.””

David nodded.

“She told me she needed time.””

“When?””

“Three days before she disappeared.””

The room went silent.

“She disappeared?””

David looked at me.

“You think she abandoned you?””

I didn’t answer.

Because that was exactly what I had believed.

David’s voice broke.

“She was planning to come back.””

My chest tightened.

“Then why didn’t she?””

He opened the folder.

And pulled out a photograph.

It was Claire.

Holding a baby.

Lily.

The picture was taken in a hospital.

On the back was writing.

My little miracle.

I swallowed.

“What does this prove?””

David looked at me.

“That Claire loved you.””

“I know she did.””

“No.””

His voice became heavier.

“You know she loved you before Vanessa entered your life.””

The room went cold.

I looked at Naomi.

“What happened after?””

David reached for another document.

“This.””

I took it.

It was a police report.

My eyes scanned the page.

There was Claire’s name.

And Vanessa’s.

“What is this?””

David looked at me.

“The night Claire left.””

I read the report again.

A confrontation.

A threat.

An argument outside Claire’s apartment.

My fingers went numb.

“Why didn’t I know about this?””

“Because the report was withdrawn.””

“By who?””

David’s eyes moved toward the stairs.

“Someone who wanted Claire gone.””

I stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I shook my head.

“No, I need proof.””

David nodded.

“That’s why I brought this.””

He pulled out a small envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Claire’s handwriting.

Marcus,

If Vanessa ever tells you I left because I didn’t love you, don’t believe her.

She is going to try to make you choose.

Please choose Lily.

My eyes burned.

Because I remembered that day.

The day Claire vanished.

The day Vanessa appeared.

The day she told me she was there for me.

The day I thought someone finally cared.

But now I wondered.

Had Vanessa been waiting?

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I looked down.

The message had only one photo.

A picture of David standing outside my house.

Below it:

“You really want to know what happened to Claire?””

Another message appeared.

“Ask your father-in-law why he never told you the baby wasn’t yours.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Lily’s bedroom door.

Then at David.

“What is she talking about?””

David’s face changed.

And that was when I knew.

May you like

There was one more secret.

A bigger one.
