Chapter 4: The Secret She Left Behind
The first thing I did after Vanessa left was lock the front door.
Not because I thought she would come back angry.
Because for the first time in years, I wasn’t sure who I had invited into my home.
Lily was still in my arms.
Her head rested against my shoulder, but she wasn’t sleeping.
She was listening.
Children always listen.
Even when adults think they don’t understand.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
“Yeah, baby?””
“Are you mad at me?””
The question hit me harder than anything Vanessa had said.
I sat on the couch with Lily beside me.
“Why would I be mad at you?””
She played with the edge of her floral dress.
“Because everybody gets upset when I tell the truth.””
My throat tightened.
“Who told you that?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I already knew.
I pulled her closer.
“Lily, listen to me.””
She looked up.
“You will never get in trouble for telling me how you feel. Never.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Even if someone says I’m bad?””
I froze.
“Who said that?””
She looked away.
“Sometimes Vanessa says I make things harder.””
My hands curled into fists.
But I kept my voice calm.
“Baby, you are not a problem.””
She nodded slowly.
Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.
“She said Mommy left because I was too much.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had been knocked out of me.
“Lily…”
She immediately covered her mouth.
“I wasn’t supposed to say.””
I held her hands gently.
“Who told you that?””
She looked toward the hallway.
“Vanessa.””
I closed my eyes.
For years, I had protected Vanessa.
I had defended her.
When Lily came home quiet, I told myself she was adjusting.
When Lily stopped asking Vanessa for bedtime stories, I told myself kids changed.
When Lily started saying she missed the way things used to be, I told myself grief was complicated.
But now I was seeing every moment differently.
And the worst part was realizing my daughter had been trying to tell me.
I just wasn’t listening.
Later that afternoon, Jordan and I sat at the kitchen counter while Lily colored in the living room.
I looked at him.
“Tell me everything.””
Jordan stared down.
“Everything?””
“Yes.””
He took a deep breath.
“My mom wasn’t always like this.””
I nodded.
“I know.””
“She changed after she realized you would always put Lily first.””
I frowned.
“I’m her father.””
“I know.””
Jordan rubbed his palms together.
“She hated that.””
Those words were difficult to hear.
Not because I doubted him.
Because some part of me had already suspected.
“What about Lily’s mom?””
Jordan looked up.
“I don’t know much.””
“But Vanessa does.””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
I leaned forward.
“What does she know?””
Jordan swallowed.
“She used to talk about her.””
“Talk about her how?””
His eyes moved toward Lily.
“Like she was a competition.””
My stomach twisted.
A competition.
That was how Vanessa saw my daughter’s mother.
Not as someone who gave me the greatest gift of my life.
As someone who stood in her way.
That evening, I went through old documents.
Not because I didn’t trust my memories.
Because Vanessa’s final words wouldn’t leave me alone.
Ask yourself why her mother’s family never came back.
I opened the old folder where I kept Lily’s birth certificate, medical records, and photographs.
Then I found something strange.
A letter.
I had never seen it before.
The envelope had Lily’s mother’s name written across it.
My hands went cold.
Inside was a single page.
The handwriting was familiar.
I had seen it hundreds of times.
It was from Claire.
Lily’s mother.
My heart pounded as I read.
Marcus,
If you are reading this, something has happened that made you look deeper than you usually do.
Please don’t be angry that I kept this from you.
I was trying to protect Lily.
I stopped reading.
Protect Lily from what?
I continued.
There is something you need to know about Vanessa.
My breathing changed.
The letter continued.
She contacted me before we ever met.
I stared at the page.
No.
That didn’t make sense.
Vanessa and Claire never knew each other.
At least, that’s what I believed.
I kept reading.
She told me she loved you.
She told me she deserved the life I had.
And she told me if I didn’t disappear, she would make sure you lost everything.
The paper shook in my hand.
I heard a sound behind me.
Jordan.
“Marcus?””
I turned.
He looked at the letter.
His face changed.
“You found it.””
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
Jordan looked terrified.
“Not all of it.””
“What did you know?””
He didn’t answer.
That silence was an answer.
I stood.
“Jordan.””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“I knew my mom had something to do with why Lily’s mom left.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“What do you mean?””
He opened his mouth.
Then the front door handle moved.
Both of us froze.
Someone was outside.
The lock turned.
And a woman’s voice came through the door.
“Marcus?””
My blood went cold.
Because I knew that voice.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It was someone I never thought I would hear again.
Claire’s sister.
May you like
And she said the one thing that made me forget how to breathe.
“Your wife was never supposed to be part of Lily’s life.””
