Chapter 3: The Photograph on My Phone
I stared at the picture until my vision blurred.
Lily.
Alone.
At the table.
A plate of food in front of her.
Her small shoulders curved inward.
She looked tiny.
Smaller than she should have looked.
Like she was trying to disappear.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who sent this?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
“Vanessa.””
Her lips parted.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
I held up the phone.
“No. You can answer.””
She looked toward the staircase.
Then back at me.
“I don’t know.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You don’t know?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“Then why are you scared?””
Her face tightened.
“I’m not scared.””
“You are.””
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Lily appeared at the top of the stairs.
Her stuffed rabbit was pressed against her chest.
“Daddy?””
Immediately, my anger disappeared.
I walked toward her.
“Hey, baby.””
She came down slowly.
Not running.
Not smiling.
Slowly.
That hurt more than anything.
Kids who feel safe run.
Kids who feel afraid move carefully.
I picked her up.
“Did you sleep okay?””
She nodded.
But she wouldn’t look at Vanessa.
I noticed.
And Vanessa noticed too.
“Lily,” Vanessa said.
My daughter froze.
“Come here.””
Lily grabbed my shirt.
“No.””
Just one word.
But it carried years of fear.
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“Marcus, see? This is what I mean.””
I looked at her.
“What exactly do you mean?””
“She’s turning you against me.””
The accusation was so shocking that I actually stepped back.
“My five-year-old daughter is turning me against you?””
“She knows what she’s doing.””
I looked down at Lily.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No, Daddy.””
I lowered my voice.
“Tell me the truth.””
She nodded.
“Sometimes she tells me I’m not supposed to tell you things.””
My heart stopped.
“What things?””
Lily looked at Vanessa.
Then whispered, “Bad things.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Lily, don’t make up stories.””
I felt my entire body tense.
“Stop.””
The room went silent.
I had never spoken to Vanessa that way before.
She stared at me.
“I said stop.””
I held Lily closer.
Then I turned toward the staircase.
“Jordan.””
A few seconds later, he appeared.
He already knew.
He walked downstairs slowly.
“Marcus.””
“Come here.””
Jordan came closer.
I showed him the picture.
His face changed.
“You got it too?””
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
He swallowed.
“She sent it to me.””
“Who?””
He looked at Vanessa.
My chest tightened.
“Jordan.””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“My mom.””
Vanessa’s face went completely blank.
“What?””
Jordan looked terrified.
“I found out two weeks ago.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“You sent it from your phone.””
“No, I didn’t.””
“You did.””
His voice was shaking now.
“You wanted me to scare Marcus.””
I looked between them.
“What is he talking about?””
Jordan wiped his eyes.
“She wanted me to delete the recording.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“Jordan, don’t.””
But he kept going.
“She said if Dad found out, he would leave her.””
My hands tightened around Lily.
“Dad?””
Jordan looked at me.
“I mean you.””
Vanessa’s voice rose.
“You’re misunderstanding everything!””
“No,” Jordan said quietly.
“I’m not.””
That was the first time I had ever heard him stand up to her.
And Vanessa knew it too.
She looked at him like he had betrayed her.
“You’re choosing him over me?””
Jordan’s face fell.
“I’m choosing what’s right.””
The sentence hung in the room.
Vanessa looked away.
For a moment, I saw something behind her anger.
Desperation.
But then her expression hardened again.
“You have no idea what’s coming.””
I narrowed my eyes.
“What does that mean?””
She grabbed her purse.
“I mean you think you know the truth.””
She walked toward the door.
I didn’t stop her.
Not yet.
Because I needed answers.
But before she left, she turned around.
“Marcus.””
I looked at her.
“There’s something about Lily’s past you never asked me about.””
My stomach dropped.
“What are you talking about?””
She smiled sadly.
Not kindly.
Sadly.
“Ask yourself why her mother’s family never came back.””
Then she walked out.
The door closed.
I stood there holding my daughter.
Jordan stood frozen beside the table.
And on the phone screen, the photograph of Lily alone remained open.
May you like
But now there was a new question burning in my mind.
What was Vanessa hiding about Lily’s mother?
