Chapter 12: The Friend Who Opened The Door

I wanted to hit him.

I wanted to scream.

I wanted to ask how someone who called himself my brother could stand beside me for years while holding the truth in his hands.

But I didn’t.

Because Daniel looked worse than I felt.

And somehow that made it harder.

“Start talking.””

My voice was cold.

Daniel nodded.

“I met Vanessa before you did.””

“When?””

“Months before Claire died.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

He looked down.

“She found me at the office.””

“Why would she find you?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Because she knew I was your friend.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

He sighed.

“She knew you were struggling.””

I looked away.

After Claire died, I was barely surviving.

Everyone knew that.

“She said she wanted to help you.””

“And you believed her?””

“Yes.””

His answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

“Why?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because I saw you falling apart.””

The room became quiet.

“You stopped sleeping.””

“I know.””

“You stopped taking care of yourself.””

“I know.””

“You were trying to raise Lily alone.””

My hands tightened.

“So you thought I needed someone.””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought I was helping.””

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“You introduced the person who tried to destroy my family.””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t know what it feels like to look at your daughter and wonder how long she was scared.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know I failed you.””

“You did.””

He accepted it.

No excuses.

That almost made me angrier.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled.

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

I stared.

“With what?””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

He opened a folder of messages.

I read them.

Vanessa had sent dozens.

You owe me.

You helped me start this.

Don’t pretend you’re innocent.

My stomach turned.

“She blackmailed you.””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew I had made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

His silence lasted too long.

Then:

“I helped her get information.””

“What information?””

“About Claire.””

The room felt smaller.

“You gave Vanessa Claire’s private information?””

“I didn’t know what she would do.””

“You gave it to her.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Because there was no defense.

Then Daniel said something that made me stop.

“Marcus.””

I looked back.

“Claire knew.””

My expression changed.

“What?””

“She knew I was involved.””

“How?””

“Because she confronted me.””

“When?””

“Before she disappeared.””

I felt sick.

“What did she say?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“She told me Vanessa was dangerous.””

“And?””

“I didn’t believe her.””

That sentence hung there.

Another person who didn’t believe Claire.

Another person who ignored her.

Another person who left her alone.

“What happened after?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“She asked me to help her leave.””

“Leave where?””

“Somewhere Vanessa couldn’t find her.””

I stared.

“She was planning to leave?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

Daniel nodded sadly.

“She thought Vanessa had already convinced you she was unstable.””

My heart hurt.

Because I remembered.

I remembered all the times Vanessa told me Claire’s family was causing drama.

I remembered thinking they were making things worse.

I remembered choosing peace over questions.

And Claire paid the price.

“What happened that night?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The night Claire disappeared?””

“Yes.””

He swallowed.

“She never made it to the airport.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

“Because someone followed her.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

“You said Vanessa didn’t act alone.””

He nodded.

“She had help.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then said:

“The person who signed Lily’s emergency custody papers.””

I froze.

“What papers?””

Daniel pulled out a copy.

A temporary custody agreement.

My name.

Lily’s name.

And a signature.

I looked closer.

Then my heart stopped.

Because I recognized it.

Not Vanessa’s.

Not David’s.

Not Daniel’s.

Mine.

Except I had never signed it.

“This is fake.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why does it have my signature?””

He looked at me.

“Because someone copied it.””

My phone buzzed.

A video message.

From Claire.

Everyone went silent.

I opened it.

Claire appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus.””

My eyes burned.

“I’m sorry it took me this long.””

She took a shaky breath.

“There is something you need to know.””

Behind her, a door slammed.

Claire looked frightened.

Then whispered:

“The person who helped Vanessa take Lily from me…”

She looked away.

Then back at the camera.

“…is standing in your house right now.””

The video ended.

I slowly lowered the phone.

Because everyone in the room was looking at me.

And I realized the worst part.

Someone was inside my home.

Someone close enough to reach Lily.

May you like

Someone I trusted.

I ran upstairs.
