Chapter 6: The Truth Under the Floorboards
I didn’t show anyone the second message.
Not immediately.
Because there are moments when the truth feels too dangerous to touch.
You know something is wrong.
You know the answer will change everything.
But some part of you wants to stay in the small space before the truth arrives.
The space where your life still makes sense.
That night, I sat beside Lily’s bed again.
She was asleep.
Her hand rested on top of mine.
A habit she developed after her mother died.
Whenever she was scared, she needed to know I was still there.
I looked at my daughter’s face.
And I wondered how many nights she had been afraid in her own home.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Naomi.
Can we talk privately?
I walked downstairs.
Naomi and Jordan were waiting in the living room.
“Tell me about the pregnancy message,” Naomi said.
I looked at her.
“You know about it?””
Her expression changed.
“Marcus…”
“What?””
She sat down slowly.
“Claire didn’t tell you because Vanessa made sure she couldn’t.””
I felt my patience disappear.
“Everyone keeps saying that. I need details.””
Naomi nodded.
“You deserve them.””
She took a breath.
“When Claire found out she was pregnant, she was happy.””
I smiled sadly.
“I remember.””
“She wanted to tell you in a special way.””
My eyes dropped.
“She planned everything.””
Naomi’s voice softened.
“Then Vanessa appeared.””
I looked up.
“She told Claire that you were going to leave her.””
I shook my head.
“I would never.””
“I know.””
“She didn’t know that?””
“She knew.””
Naomi looked away.
“She just wanted Claire to doubt herself.””
Jordan spoke quietly.
“My mom does that.””
We both looked at him.
He looked ashamed.
“She makes people question what they know.””
I sat down.
“Why?””
“Because if people doubt themselves, they become easier to control.””
The words were simple.
But they explained everything.
Then Naomi opened her bag again.
She removed a small notebook.
“She left this for Lily.””
I stared.
“Why do you have it?””
“Because Claire gave it to me the day she left.””
My hands shook.
“She knew she was leaving?””
Naomi nodded.
“She thought she had no choice.””
I opened the notebook.
The first page had Claire’s handwriting.
For my little girl.
I swallowed hard.
The next page made my heart stop.
I’m sorry I won’t be there to tell you this myself.
I had to leave because someone wanted me gone.
I kept reading.
But your father loves you more than anything.
Never believe anyone who tells you otherwise.
My eyes blurred.
Claire knew.
She knew someone would try to convince Lily she wasn’t loved.
I closed the notebook.
“Why didn’t Claire come back?””
Naomi was quiet.
Too quiet.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Because she thought you chose Vanessa.””
I felt sick.
“What?””
“She received messages that looked like they came from you.””
My face went numb.
“I never sent them.””
“I know.””
“What did they say?””
Naomi hesitated.
Then whispered:
“They said you were tired of fighting. They said you wanted a new family.””
I stood immediately.
“No.””
My voice broke.
“No, I would never say that.””
Naomi nodded.
“I know.””
Jordan looked toward the hallway.
“Someone’s here.””
We all froze.
A shadow moved behind the glass door.
Then a knock.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone went silent.
I walked toward the door.
My hand reached for the handle.
Then my phone lit up.
A new message.
From Vanessa.
Don’t open that door.
My heart stopped.
Because the person outside wasn’t a stranger.
May you like
It was someone Vanessa knew was coming.
And when I opened the door, the person standing there held a folder with Lily’s name written across the front.
