Chapter 13: The Stranger Inside My Home
I ran upstairs so fast I almost fell.
“Lily!””
My voice echoed through the hallway.
The bedroom door was open.
For one terrifying second, I couldn’t see her.
Then I saw her.
Sitting on the floor.
Holding her stuffed rabbit.
Safe.
Alive.
My knees nearly gave out.
“Daddy?””
I rushed to her.
I picked her up and held her so tightly she laughed softly.
“Daddy, you’re squeezing me.””
I closed my eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
She looked confused.
“Are you scared?””
I looked at my daughter.
Five years old.
Too young to understand the war happening around her.
But old enough to feel every piece of it.
“Yes,” I whispered.
She touched my face.
“Why?””
I didn’t know how to answer.
Because the truth was too heavy.
Because I was afraid that everyone I trusted had failed us.
A few minutes later, I brought Lily downstairs.
Daniel, Naomi, and Jordan were waiting.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone understood.
Someone had been in my house.
Someone had access.
Someone knew where Lily was.
Naomi looked at me.
“Where is Vanessa?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel looked worried.
“Did she leave?””
“I don’t know.””
Jordan stood.
“What about David?””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.””
The words frustrated me.
For years, I thought I understood my life.
Now every answer created another question.
Then Jordan pointed toward the hallway.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
He walked slowly toward the bookshelf near the entrance.
“There.””
He reached behind a row of books.
And pulled out something small.
A tiny black device.
My stomach dropped.
“What is that?””
Jordan stared at it.
“A camera.””
Nobody moved.
A camera.
Inside my house.
I felt something cold move through me.
“How long?””
Jordan examined it carefully.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Vanessa?””
I looked at him.
“Maybe.””
But something bothered me.
Something felt wrong.
Because Vanessa was cruel.
Manipulative.
Controlling.
But this?
This was organized.
Calculated.
Someone had planned every step.
Naomi looked at the camera.
“Marcus.””
I turned.
“She didn’t do this alone.””
I already knew.
The question was who.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
Not Vanessa.
Not David.
Someone else.
“Marcus.””
I tightened my grip.
“Who is this?””
“You need to stop looking for Claire.””
My blood ran cold.
“Where is she?””
A pause.
Then a quiet laugh.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Understand what?””
“You think this was about Vanessa wanting your life.””
The voice became colder.
“It was never just about her.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone was listening.
“Who are you?””
The man ignored the question.
“You need to look at the papers.””
“What papers?””
“The custody papers.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
“The ones you never signed.””
Silence.
“How do you know about those?””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Then Jordan spoke.
“Marcus.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed toward the table.
The folder.
The one David left behind.
“It wasn’t empty before.””
I walked over.
Opened it.
Inside were documents I hadn’t seen.
A stack of legal papers.
And on top…
A photo.
A photo of Claire.
Holding baby Lily.
But behind her was someone else.
Someone standing in the doorway.
Watching.
I picked up the picture.
My hands shook.
Because I recognized the person.
It was Daniel.
But he looked younger.
And he wasn’t looking at Claire like a friend.
He looked terrified.
I turned the picture over.
A date.
The day before Claire disappeared.
Underneath was a handwritten note.
“He knows what happened.””
Everyone looked at Daniel.
His face went pale.
“Marcus…”
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
He raised his hands.
“I can explain.””
“Explain why you were there.””
Daniel looked at the photo.
Then closed his eyes.
“Because Claire called me.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew something was wrong.””
“What?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“She knew someone had changed her plans.””
My heart pounded.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
And whispered:
“She thought it was me.””
The room went silent.
“You?””
Daniel nodded.
“She thought I betrayed her.””
“Did you?””
His eyes filled.
“No.””
Then he looked toward the hallway.
“But I know who did.””
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Then the front door unlocked.
Everyone froze.
The handle turned.
The door opened.
And Vanessa walked inside.
May you like
But she wasn’t alone.
Beside her stood Claire.
