Chapter 9: The Woman Behind The Smile
The next morning, I drove to Vanessa’s old apartment.
I didn’t tell anyone.
Not Jordan.
Not Naomi.
Not David.
Because I needed answers without another person’s version of the truth.
I needed to see the place where everything started.
The building looked different than I remembered.
Smaller.
Older.
But the memories were still there.
The hallway.
The elevator.
The door where Vanessa once stood crying, telling me she understood my pain.
Back then, I thought she was my safe place.
Now I wondered if she had been waiting for me to be broken.
I knocked.
No answer.
I knocked again.
Then the door opened.
Vanessa stood there.
No makeup.
No perfect smile.
Just exhaustion.
“You came.””
I stared.
“You knew I would.””
She stepped aside.
“Come in.””
I didn’t move.
“Why?””
“Because you deserve answers.””
The words surprised me.
I entered.
The apartment was almost empty.
Boxes covered the floor.
“You’re leaving?””
She looked away.
“I think you already decided that.””
I ignored it.
“Tell me about Claire.””
Her expression changed.
“You believe them.””
“I believe what I saw.””
“You saw pieces.””
“Then give me the whole picture.””
She walked toward the window.
For a moment, she looked like someone who had lost everything.
Then she spoke.
“I was lonely.””
I frowned.
“That’s your explanation?””
“No.””
She turned.
“It’s the beginning.””
She sat down.
“I met you when you were broken.””
I remembered.
After Claire died, I was barely functioning.
Lily was still a baby.
I was surviving.
Vanessa had been kind.
Patient.
Supportive.
“I helped you.””
“Yes.””
“And I loved you.””
I looked at her.
“But you hated that Lily came first.””
Her face hardened.
“I hated feeling invisible.””
“That’s not Lily’s fault.””
“I know.””
The answer surprised me.
“I know,” she repeated.
“But I was angry.””
“You took that anger out on a child.””
Her eyes filled.
For a second, I thought I saw regret.
Then she looked away.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“You made choices.””
She didn’t argue.
That was the first honest thing she had done.
“Did you threaten Claire?””
Long silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
My heart stopped.
She admitted it.
Just like that.
“I didn’t think she would leave.””
I stared at her.
“You wanted her scared.””
“I wanted her to let go.””
“You wanted my family.””
Her eyes met mine.
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
“Why?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I saw what you had.””
I waited.
“You loved her.””
The room became silent.
“I hated that someone could have that kind of love.””
I shook my head.
“That isn’t love.””
“I know.””
She looked down.
“I know now.””
I wanted to feel sympathy.
I tried.
But then I remembered Lily on the floor.
The orange juice.
The fear.
The recording.
“What did you do after Claire left?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
A small flicker of fear.
“I tried to fix things.””
“You replaced her.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
She looked away.
“I wanted to be there for Lily.””
“You wanted to be her mother.””
She didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Jordan.
Marcus, you need to come home. Now.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What happened?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But she did.
I could see it.
I turned toward the door.
Before I left, Vanessa said:
“Marcus.””
I stopped.
“You think you know the worst thing I did.””
I looked back.
Her eyes were filled with fear.
“But you don’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
She swallowed.
“The night Claire disappeared…”
I waited.
“She wasn’t alone.””
The room went silent.
“Who was with her?””
Vanessa looked at me.
And whispered:
“Someone you trust.””
My phone buzzed again.
This time it was a photo.
From Jordan.
A picture taken inside my house.
A person standing in the hallway.
Holding Lily’s old birth certificate.
And the message below said:
“I found who has been hiding the final secret.””
I looked at the picture.
May you like
And my blood ran cold.
Because the person standing there was someone I never suspected.
