The Wall That Hid Her / Chapter 1 / 15

Chapter 1: The Sound Behind the Wall

“Marcus: What did you do to her?!””

The words left his mouth before he even understood what he was seeing.

After flying home early from Chicago, Marcus had expected a quiet evening with his family. He had imagined Maya running into his arms, her laughter filling the house, his eight-year-old daughter showing him the drawings she had made while he was away.

Instead, he walked into the kitchen hallway and saw his daughter frozen beside the cabinets, one hand pressed against her cheek, tears sliding down her face.

And Vanessa’s hand was still in the air.

For one second, nobody moved.

The bright lights above the kitchen island hummed softly. The smell of fresh coffee lingered in the air. Everything about the modern family home looked peaceful.

Except for Maya’s trembling shoulders.

Except for the red mark on her cheek.

Except for the fear in her eyes.

Marcus dropped his suitcase.

He crossed the room in three steps and pulled Maya behind him.

“Marcus: Look at me, baby. Are you hurt?””

Maya looked up at him, trying not to cry harder.

“Vanessa: Marcus, you’re home early.””

Vanessa lowered her hand slowly. Her mint satin blouse was perfectly pressed. Her hair was perfectly styled. She looked like someone who had been prepared for a dinner party, not someone caught standing over a crying child.

“She needed discipline,” Vanessa said.

Marcus stared at her.

“Marcus: Discipline?””

His voice became quieter.

That made Vanessa look away.

“Vanessa: You don’t understand what happened.””

Marcus glanced at Maya.

The little girl was holding something in her hand.

A small piece of bread.

Not a sandwich. Not a snack from a plate.

Just one piece of bread.

Marcus frowned.

“Marcus: Maya, why are you holding that?””

Maya looked toward the kitchen wall.

Not at Vanessa.

Not at him.

The wall.

A narrow section near the floor where the white paint didn’t quite match the rest.

Marcus followed her eyes.

“Maya: Dad…”

Her voice cracked.

“Marcus: What is it?””

Maya stepped closer to him but kept staring at the wall.

“Please don’t let her stop me.””

A cold feeling moved through Marcus’s chest.

“Marcus: Stop you from what?””

Maya looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time since Marcus entered, she looked afraid.

“Vanessa: Maya is confused.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“Marcus: Why would my daughter be scared of you?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Maya slowly walked past Marcus.

“Marcus: Maya, wait.””

But she kept moving.

She dropped to her knees beside the bottom of the wall.

Marcus watched as his daughter pushed aside a small piece of loose trim he had never noticed before.

There was an opening.

Not a door.

Not a vent.

A narrow gap hidden inside the wall.

Maya held out the bread.

“Marcus: Maya… what are you doing?””

The house became silent.

Then something moved inside the darkness.

A hand appeared.

An adult hand.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The fingers reached through the opening and took the bread.

Marcus stopped breathing.

The color drained from Vanessa’s face.

“Marcus: Who’s in there?””

Nobody answered.

The hand disappeared.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Marcus: I asked who’s in there.””

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“Vanessa: Marcus, don’t.””

He looked at her hand on his sleeve.

Then at her face.

Then back at the wall.

And for the first time since he walked through the door, Marcus realized something terrifying.

Vanessa wasn’t surprised.

May you like

She was scared.

And she had known this was coming.
