Chapter 6: The Secret Under the House
Marcus ran.
Not toward Vanessa.
Not toward the front door.
Back to the wall.
Because suddenly, the person who mattered most was the one who had been trapped inside.
“Maya, stay here!””
He dropped beside the opening.
“Marcus: Elena?””
A weak response came immediately.
“I’m here.””
Relief hit him so hard he almost collapsed.
“Marcus: Are you hurt?””
A pause.
“Woman: I’m okay.””
But her voice said otherwise.
Marcus looked through the opening.
He could see more now.
Not everything.
Just enough.
A small hidden space.
A blanket.
A water bottle.
A stack of documents.
A life reduced to a secret corner.
Maya knelt beside him.
“Marcus: I told you to stay back.””
She wiped her tears.
“Maya: She was alone.””
Marcus looked at his daughter.
Eight years old.
And somehow brave enough to do what adults failed to do.
He reached out and held her hand.
“Marcus: You were feeding her?””
Maya nodded.
“Marcus: How long?””
Maya looked scared.
“Since before you left for Chicago.””
Marcus froze.
Before he left.
That meant this wasn’t new.
This had been happening while he was away.
“Marcus: Why didn’t you tell me?””
Maya looked down.
“Because Vanessa said you would be angry.””
His stomach twisted.
“Marcus: Angry at who?””
Maya whispered:
“At her.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
Vanessa had controlled the story.
She had controlled the fear.
She had controlled his daughter.
A sound came from the hidden room.
Elena spoke softly.
“Woman: Marcus.””
He looked back.
“Woman: There’s something you need to know.””
“Marcus: Tell me.””
Her voice shook.
“Woman: I wasn’t the only thing Vanessa was hiding.””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“What does that mean?””
Elena hesitated.
“Woman: The reason she wanted me gone…”
The sentence stopped.
Marcus waited.
“Woman: It wasn’t because she wanted you.””
The words confused him.
“Marcus: Then why?””
Silence.
Then:
“Woman: Because I knew the truth about Maya.””
Marcus turned slowly.
Maya’s face changed.
She looked frightened.
“Marcus: What truth?””
No answer.
“Maya?””
The little girl stepped back.
“Marcus: Baby, what is she talking about?””
Maya’s eyes filled with tears.
“I don’t know.””
Marcus believed her.
He knew his daughter.
But Elena’s words had opened a door he didn’t want to walk through.
He looked at the papers inside the hidden space.
“Marcus: Give me those.””
A hand slowly pushed the documents forward.
Marcus took them.
The first page was old.
Official.
Stamped.
His eyes scanned the top.
Then he stopped.
The document was a birth record.
Not Maya’s.
Another child’s.
Marcus felt dizzy.
Because the name on the paper was familiar.
Too familiar.
A name he had heard once.
A name Vanessa told him belonged to someone who didn’t exist.
He flipped the page.
There was a photograph attached.
A baby.
A baby with a small birthmark near her shoulder.
Marcus looked at Maya.
Then back at the picture.
His daughter touched her own shoulder.
The same place.
The same mark.
His breathing became shallow.
“Marcus: No…”
Maya whispered:
“Dad?””
He couldn’t answer.
Because behind the wall, Elena said the words he was afraid to hear.
“Marcus…”
Her voice broke.
“Your daughter was never supposed to be Vanessa’s secret.””
Marcus stared at the papers.
Then at Maya.
Then at the hidden darkness.
And from outside the house came the sound of a car door closing.
Vanessa had not left.
May you like
She had been waiting.
And now someone else was walking toward the house. :::
