Chapter 10: The Room That Was Never on the Blueprint
Marcus stared at the wall.
The crack in the paint was small.
Almost invisible.
But now that he saw it, he couldn’t unsee it.
Another hidden space.
Another secret.
Another person waiting for someone to find them.
His phone was still pressed against his ear even though the call had already ended.
The child’s voice echoed in his mind.
Are you coming to save me too?
Maya stood beside Elena, shaking.
“Marcus: Dad…”
He looked back at her.
“Marcus: I’m here.””
But the words felt different now.
Because he had said them before.
And somehow, he had still failed.
Elena watched him carefully from the opening.
“Woman: Marcus, listen to me.””
He turned.
“Marcus: What?””
Her voice was quiet.
“Woman: Vanessa doesn’t hide things randomly.””
Daniel looked away.
Marcus noticed.
“Marcus: You know what’s behind that wall.””
Daniel stayed silent.
“Marcus: Don’t make me ask again.””
Daniel exhaled.
“There was a room.””
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
“A room?””
Daniel nodded.
“Not on the house plans.””
Marcus looked around.
“This is my house.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“No.””
A pause.
“It was Vanessa’s house first.””
The words unsettled him.
Marcus stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Before you moved in, Vanessa renovated parts of the property.””
Marcus remembered.
The construction.
The months when he was traveling.
The excuses.
The locked doors.
The workers who always left before he arrived home.
He had thought nothing of it.
Because he trusted her.
That realization hurt.
“Marcus: Where is the room?””
Daniel pointed.
“Behind that wall.””
Marcus looked at the cracked paint.
The same wall.
The same house.
Another prison.
Maya moved closer.
“Marcus: Is someone else in there?””
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
Marcus grabbed a flashlight from the kitchen drawer.
“Marcus: I’m opening it.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Marcus: Wait.””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t understand.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You keep saying that.””
His voice was low.
“But every person who kept a secret from me said the same thing.””
Daniel looked down.
“I’m trying to keep you alive.””
Marcus froze.
“Marcus: What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She knows you found everything.””
A cold feeling moved through Marcus.
“Marcus: Vanessa?””
Daniel nodded.
“She won’t let you expose her.””
Elena suddenly spoke.
“Marcus.””
He looked toward her.
“Woman: She’s right.””
Marcus frowned.
“You believe him?””
Elena looked at Daniel.
“I don’t trust him.””
Daniel accepted that.
“But I know what Vanessa is capable of.””
Marcus looked between them.
The people around him were all connected by secrets.
All carrying pieces of a truth he still didn’t fully understand.
He placed his hand against the cracked wall.
“Maya: Dad, please.””
He looked back.
Her face reminded him why he couldn’t stop.
Not now.
Not again.
“Marcus: I’m going to bring everyone out.””
He pulled.
The hidden panel resisted.
Then broke open.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Not a room.
A path.
A hidden hallway built between the walls of the house.
Marcus shined the flashlight inside.
The beam revealed old scratches along the wood.
Marks.
Lines.
Like someone had counted days.
Maya covered her mouth.
Elena looked away.
Marcus noticed.
“Marcus: You’ve seen this before.””
Elena didn’t answer.
“Marcus: Elena.””
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.””
He froze.
“When?””
She whispered:
“Before Vanessa locked me away.””
Marcus felt his chest tighten.
“You knew about this place?””
“I found it.””
“And?””
Elena looked at Maya.
“I found something else.””
“What?””
Her voice dropped.
“A room where Vanessa kept everything she didn’t want anyone to find.””
Marcus stepped into the hidden hallway.
The air smelled old.
Dusty.
Forgotten.
The walls seemed to close around him.
Behind him, Maya stayed with Elena.
Daniel followed.
As they moved deeper, Marcus saw things along the floor.
Old photographs.
Broken toys.
Letters.
Evidence of lives hidden away.
Then the hallway opened.
A small room waited at the end.
Marcus stopped.
Because on the wall were photographs.
Hundreds of them.
All of Maya.
Different ages.
Different days.
Different moments.
Some taken from across the street.
Some through windows.
Some from inside the house.
Marcus felt sick.
“Marcus: What is this?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“She was watching her.””
Marcus walked closer.
His hand moved over one photograph.
Maya sleeping.
Another.
Maya eating breakfast.
Another.
Maya crying.
His anger became something colder.
“Marcus: Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then he saw a folder on the desk.
His name was written on it.
Marcus opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
Notes.
And one sentence written in Vanessa’s handwriting.
He read it once.
Then again.
Because he couldn’t believe it.
“The child is the only thing keeping Marcus from leaving.””
Marcus slowly looked up.
Behind him, Daniel whispered:
“Marcus…”
A sound came from the room next door.
A child crying.
Marcus turned.
There was another door.
Locked.
And from behind it came a small voice.
“Please…”
Marcus stepped closer.
The voice continued:
“Please don’t let her find me.””
Marcus reached for the handle.
Then stopped.
May you like
Because carved into the door were four words.
Do not open alone.
