The Wall That Hid Her / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9: The Second Secret

Darkness swallowed the room.

Maya screamed.

Marcus immediately grabbed her.

“Marcus: I’ve got you.””

The house was silent.

No lights.

No movement.

Only breathing.

Then a sound came from somewhere deeper inside.

A door closing.

Marcus held Maya close.

“Marcus: Stay with Elena.””

He guided Maya toward the opening.

Elena reached out.

Marcus looked at her.

“Marcus: Keep her safe.””

Elena nodded.

Then Marcus turned.

“Where is Vanessa?””

Nobody answered.

The darkness made every corner feel unfamiliar.

Even his own house felt like a stranger’s place.

Daniel pulled out his phone.

The screen lit his face.

“Daniel: She’s gone.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Marcus: How?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“She knows the house better than anyone.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“She built the cage.””

The emergency lights finally flickered on.

The room returned.

But Vanessa was gone.

On the floor near the wall was something new.

A small metal key.

Marcus picked it up.

Attached was a tag.

One word.

Basement.

Marcus stared.

“Marcus: We don’t have a basement.””

Daniel went pale.

Marcus noticed immediately.

“You know something.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Marcus: Tell me.””

Daniel looked at Elena.

Then Maya.

Then the key.

Finally:

“Daniel: This house wasn’t built the way you think.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel swallowed.

“There are spaces that don’t appear on the plans.””

Marcus looked toward the hidden wall.

Another secret.

Another hidden place.

“How many?””

Daniel looked away.

“I don’t know.””

That answer was worse.

Marcus walked toward the hallway.

Maya grabbed his hand.

“Marcus: Dad, don’t go.””

He looked at her.

For years, he had thought protecting his family meant keeping danger away.

Now he understood.

Sometimes danger was already inside.

“Marcus: I have to.””

Elena reached through the opening.

“Marcus.””

He stopped.

“Don’t trust what you see down there.””

Marcus turned.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Because Vanessa planned everything.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Marcus: There’s one more thing.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“The person Vanessa was protecting…”

A pause.

“…is not me.””

Marcus stared.

“Then who?””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

Toward the hidden parts of the house.

Toward the places nobody was supposed to find.

Before he could answer, Marcus’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

Marcus answered.

A voice came through.

A child’s voice.

Not Maya’s.

Another child.

“Hello?””

Marcus’s blood turned cold.

The voice whispered:

“Mr. Marcus…”

A pause.

“Are you coming to save me too?””

The call ended.

Marcus looked at Elena.

Then Maya.

Then the hidden hallway.

And on the wall beside him, a small section of paint began to crack.

May you like

Something inside the house moved.

Something else had been waiting.
