The Wall That Hid Her / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Person at the Door

The footsteps outside stopped.

Marcus didn’t move.

The documents trembled slightly in his hand.

Behind him, Maya grabbed the back of his suit jacket.

“Marcus: Dad…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

He turned toward the front door.

The house was silent again.

Too silent.

The kind of silence that came before something broke.

Marcus slowly stood.

“Marcus: Stay behind me.””

Maya nodded.

He looked toward the hidden opening.

“Elena, don’t make a sound.””

A moment passed.

Then:

“Elena: Marcus…”

Her voice was weak.

“Marcus: Trust me.””

He didn’t know if he deserved that trust.

Not after all these years.

Not after believing the wrong story.

But right now, there was only one thing he knew.

Someone had been hurting the people he loved.

And he was done letting that happen.

The front door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then the door opened.

Vanessa stepped inside.

But she wasn’t alone.

A man stood behind her.

Older.

Tall.

Wearing a dark jacket.

Marcus immediately recognized him.

Not personally.

From the papers.

From the documents inside the wall.

The name written beside the signatures.

“Marcus: Who is he?””

Vanessa said nothing.

The man looked around the room.

His eyes stopped on the damaged wall.

Then on Marcus.

Then on Maya.

“Man: You found it.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Marcus: You know about this?””

The man didn’t answer.

That angered Marcus.

“Marcus: I asked you a question.””

Vanessa closed the door behind them.

“Maya: Dad…”

Marcus noticed something.

Vanessa wasn’t afraid of this man.

She was afraid of what he might say.

The man looked at the cracked phone in Marcus’s hand.

“Man: Where did you get that?””

Marcus tightened his grip.

“Marcus: It came from inside the wall.””

The man’s expression changed.

Just for a second.

But Marcus saw it.

Shock.

“Marcus: Who are you?””

The man looked at Vanessa.

Then back at Marcus.

“Man: My name is Daniel.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Marcus looked at the documents again.

Daniel’s name.

On the birth record.

On the old papers.

His jaw tightened.

“Marcus: Why is your name on these?””

Daniel stayed quiet.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Vanessa: We need to leave.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

One word.

One decision.

“Marcus: Nobody leaves.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Daniel: Marcus, you need to understand something.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Marcus: That sentence is getting old.””

Daniel ignored him.

“The truth you’re looking for…”

He looked toward the wall.

“…is not the truth you want.””

Marcus felt anger rising.

“Marcus: You don’t get to decide what I can handle.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“That girl deserves to know.””

Marcus immediately moved in front of her.

“Marcus: Don’t look at her.””

Daniel’s face softened.

“Daniel: I’m not trying to hurt her.””

“Marcus: Everyone who says that usually is.””

Behind the wall, Elena made a small sound.

Daniel froze.

He heard her.

“Daniel: She’s alive.””

Marcus stared.

“You knew?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Marcus grabbed the documents.

“Marcus: How many people knew?””

Nobody spoke.

“Marcus: How many people knew my wife was alive?””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

Marcus felt something inside him break.

Years of grief.

Years of questions.

Years of believing he had lost someone forever.

All because people around him chose silence.

He walked toward the opening.

“Marcus: Elena.””

“Yes?””

“I need you to tell me everything.””

A pause.

Then Elena answered:

“I will.””

Her voice became weaker.

“But you need to open the wall first.””

Marcus placed his hand on the panel.

Then Daniel suddenly said:

“Don’t.””

Marcus stopped.

“Why?””

Daniel looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“Because the moment you open that wall…”

He looked at Vanessa.

“…she won’t be able to hide what she did.””

Marcus slowly turned.

Vanessa’s face went pale.

And for the first time, Marcus understood.

May you like

The wall was never meant to keep Elena inside.

It was meant to keep the truth out.
