The Wall That Hid Her / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Erased

Marcus didn’t move.

The photograph remained between his fingers.

The date on the back burned into his mind.

Two years.

Two years after the disappearance.

Two years after he was told there was no hope.

Two years after Vanessa entered his life.

He looked at the opening.

“Marcus: Who are you?””

A long silence followed.

The woman inside took a shaky breath.

“Woman: You know who I am.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

He wanted to believe it.

Every part of him wanted to.

But years of grief had taught him something cruel.

Hope could hurt worse than loss.

“Marcus: Say your name.””

The woman hesitated.

Then:

“Woman: Elena.””

The room disappeared.

Marcus took one step back.

Elena.

A name he had whispered alone in the dark.

A name he stopped saying because it hurt too much.

Maya looked at him.

“Marcus: Dad?””

He couldn’t answer.

Vanessa’s face became pale.

“Marcus: You knew.””

Vanessa looked away.

“Marcus: You knew she was alive.””

“Vanessa: Marcus, listen to me.””

“Marcus: No.””

His voice cracked.

“Marcus: You listen.””

He pointed toward the wall.

“Marcus: My wife has been inside this house.””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

“My daughter has been taking care of her.””

His hand tightened.

“And you have been standing here pretending nothing happened.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Vanessa: It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.””

Marcus stared.

“Marcus: Like what?””

No answer.

He stepped closer.

“Marcus: Like I finding out?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Vanessa: Yes.””

The honesty shocked him.

Maya moved behind Marcus.

“Marcus: Why?””

Vanessa rubbed her hands together.

A nervous habit he had never noticed before.

“Vanessa: Because you would have left.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Marcus: Left?””

“Vanessa: You would have chosen her.””

The words came out bitter.

Not sad.

Bitter.

Marcus stared at the woman he married.

“Marcus: She was my wife.””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“And I was finally building a life with you.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Marcus: So you hid her?””

Vanessa looked toward the wall.

“She knew things.””

Marcus froze.

“Marcus: What things?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Behind the wall, Elena whispered:

“Marcus…”

He turned.

“Woman: I tried to tell you.””

Her voice trembled.

“I tried.””

Marcus crouched near the opening.

“Marcus: Tell me now.””

A pause.

Then:

“Woman: Vanessa wasn’t supposed to be in our lives.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Vanessa: Don’t.””

Marcus looked up.

That one word revealed everything.

“Marcus: What happened?””

Elena’s breathing became faster.

“I found out something about her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Vanessa: You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Elena’s voice became stronger.

“I knew what she was doing.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What was she doing?””

Neither woman spoke.

The silence was unbearable.

Then Maya suddenly pointed toward the floor.

“Dad…”

Marcus looked down.

Something had fallen from inside the wall.

A small envelope.

He picked it up.

His name was written on the front.

In Elena’s handwriting.

The same handwriting he remembered from birthday cards and grocery lists.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a single page.

Only one sentence.

Marcus read it.

And the blood drained from his face.

Because Elena had written:

“If you are reading this, Vanessa already knows you found the room.””

Marcus slowly looked up.

Vanessa was gone from the hallway.

May you like

The front door was open.

And outside, somewhere in the darkness, a car engine started.
