The Wall That Hid Her / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: What Vanessa Buried

Marcus pulled the panel open.

This time, he didn’t stop.

Wood cracked.

Dust fell.

The opening widened.

Maya covered her mouth.

And finally, after years of darkness, Elena’s face appeared.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Marcus forgot how to breathe.

For a moment, he wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t confused.

He was just a man looking at the person he thought he would never see again.

“Elena…”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Marcus.””

His hand moved toward her.

But he stopped.

There was too much between them.

Too many unanswered questions.

Too much pain.

Maya stepped forward.

“Is she really my mom?””

The question broke every adult in the room.

Elena looked at her.

A mother looking at her child.

“Woman: Yes.””

Maya started crying.

Not loudly.

Just quietly.

Like she had been holding those tears for years.

Marcus turned toward Vanessa.

“You let my daughter grow up thinking she lost her mother.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Vanessa: You think I wanted this?””

Marcus stared.

“I think you made choices.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at him sharply.

“Don’t.””

Marcus noticed.

Again.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

“Marcus: What are you afraid I’ll learn?””

Vanessa looked away.

Daniel answered.

“She’s afraid you’ll learn why Elena disappeared.””

Marcus turned.

“Elena?””

She looked down.

“Marcus: Tell me.””

Elena was silent.

Then:

“Vanessa wasn’t just hiding me.””

Marcus waited.

“She was rewriting everything.””

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Elena looked toward Maya.

“She changed records.””

The room became still.

“Marcus: Records?””

Elena nodded.

“She wanted everyone to believe Maya was only connected to her.””

Marcus looked at Maya.

“Marcus: What?””

Maya looked confused.

Elena continued.

“She wanted you to believe the story she created.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Vanessa: Stop.””

Marcus turned.

“No.””

His voice was calm now.

That scared Vanessa more.

“Marcus: She speaks.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t understand.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No. I understand perfectly.””

He held up the documents.

“You lied.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

A crack appeared.

Not sadness.

Not regret.

Defeat.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“She thought if she controlled the paperwork, she controlled the family.””

Marcus looked at him.

“And you?””

Daniel looked down.

“I helped.””

The admission stunned everyone.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You helped?””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought I was protecting someone.””

“Marcus: Who?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

The answer was obvious.

Marcus felt sick.

All these years.

So many secrets.

All connected to one child.

Maya walked closer to Elena.

“Why didn’t you come get me?””

Elena broke.

A mother’s pain filled her voice.

“I tried.””

Marcus looked at her.

Elena continued:

“But Vanessa made sure nobody believed me.””

Vanessa laughed softly.

A cold sound.

“You want them to think I’m a monster.””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody needed to.

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“You want the truth?””

Marcus said nothing.

She stepped closer.

“The truth is that Elena was never supposed to come back.””

Maya grabbed Marcus’s hand.

“Marcus: What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked directly at him.

Then she said:

“She wasn’t the only person who disappeared.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa smiled sadly.

A smile that made his stomach turn.

“Marcus: There’s something else hidden in this house.””

May you like

And before anyone could respond…

The lights went out.
