The Wall That Hid Her / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Child Behind the Door

Marcus stared at the warning carved into the wood.

Do not open alone.

The message was old.

Deep scratches cut into the door.

Someone had wanted those words to survive.

Someone had known that one day, someone would find this place.

Daniel stood behind him.

“Daniel: Marcus.””

He didn’t turn.

“Marcus: You knew.””

Silence.

“Marcus: You knew there was another child here.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Marcus spun around.

The anger in his face made Daniel step back.

“How many secrets did you help hide?””

Daniel had no answer.

That was the answer.

Marcus looked back at the locked door.

The crying had stopped.

That scared him more.

He stepped closer.

“Marcus: Hello?””

Nothing.

“Marcus: I’m not going to hurt you.””

A few seconds passed.

Then:

Child: “That’s what she said.””

Marcus froze.

Maya.

Elena.

Daniel.

Everyone heard it.

The child behind the door had believed someone before.

And that person had lied.

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Marcus: Who hurt you?””

The child didn’t answer.

Instead:

“Child: Is Maya there?””

Marcus looked back.

Maya stood at the entrance.

Her face had gone pale.

“Marcus: Yes.””

The child began crying softly.

“Child: She was nice to me.””

Maya stepped forward.

“Marcus: Maya, stay with Elena.””

But Maya shook her head.

“No.””

He looked at her.

“Marcus: Baby.””

“I know her.””

Everyone went silent.

Marcus felt his heart stop.

“What?””

Maya looked at the door.

“She talked to me.””

Elena moved closer.

“When?””

Maya looked down.

“When Vanessa wasn’t looking.””

Marcus felt anger rise again.

“How long?””

Maya’s voice became small.

“A long time.””

Marcus looked at the locked door.

Then at Elena.

Then at Daniel.

Every answer created another question.

He crouched beside Maya.

“Marcus: Why didn’t you tell me?””

Maya cried.

“Because Vanessa said if I told you, she would make everyone disappear.””

The sentence broke something inside him.

Marcus pulled Maya into his arms.

“I’m sorry.””

She held onto him.

“I tried.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Behind them, Elena looked devastated.

Not because she was surprised.

Because she understood.

Maya had been carrying the weight of adults’ secrets.

Marcus stood.

He looked at the lock.

“Marcus: Open it.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus: There’s a reason the door was locked.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And that reason is someone was trapped.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he handed Marcus a small key.

Marcus stared at it.

“Where did you get this?””

Daniel looked away.

“Vanessa gave it to me.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“She wanted you to have it?””

Daniel nodded.

“Why?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because she knew I would eventually choose the child over her.””

Marcus unlocked the door.

The lock clicked.

Everyone held their breath.

The door opened slowly.

Inside was a small room.

Not a prison.

A bedroom.

A child’s bedroom.

There were drawings on the walls.

Books.

A small bed.

A stuffed animal sitting in the corner.

Marcus stepped inside.

A little girl was hiding behind the bed.

She looked younger than Maya.

Terrified.

“Marcus: Hey.””

She didn’t move.

“Marcus: My name is Marcus.””

The girl stared.

“Child: Are you Maya’s dad?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Maya.

Then back at him.

“Child: She said you would come.””

Marcus felt his throat tighten.

He knelt.

“Marcus: What’s your name?””

The girl hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Lila.””

Marcus looked around the room.

“Marcus: Lila, how long have you been here?””

The girl looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt.

A child who didn’t know how much time had passed.

Marcus looked at the walls.

Then noticed something.

A calendar.

Old.

The last marked date was years ago.

Marcus picked it up.

And froze.

Because the date was from before Maya was born.

He turned toward Daniel.

“Marcus: Explain.””

Daniel looked terrified.

“I can’t.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Marcus: You better.””

Then Lila spoke.

“She told me not to tell you.””

Marcus looked down.

“Who?””

The girl pointed toward the hallway.

Toward the hidden entrance.

“Her.””

Everyone followed her finger.

But nobody was there.

Vanessa was gone.

Then Marcus’s phone buzzed.

A new message.

One sentence.

From Vanessa.

May you like

I’m sorry you found the children.

But you never found the reason they were hidden.
