Chapter 10: The Brother We Never Knew

For several seconds after my mother’s message ended, nobody in the chapel moved.

Not even the guests who had been whispering for the last hour.

The silence was different now.

Before, people were confused.

Now, they were afraid.

Because everyone understood one thing.

This wasn’t a family secret anymore.

It was something much bigger.

I stared at the phone screen.

Three brothers.

The words kept repeating in my head.

Three.

Brothers.

My entire life, I had believed I was an only child.

Then I discovered Elijah.

Now there was someone else.

Someone who had been watching.

Someone who had been controlling everything.

Someone who looked like me.

“Daniel,” Noah whispered.

I looked down at him.

His face was pale.

A child shouldn’t have to stand in the middle of something like this.

I squeezed his shoulder.

“It’s okay.””

But even as I said it, I knew it wasn’t.

Elijah stepped closer.

“Your mother knew.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“She knew about him.””

“About our third brother?””

He nodded slowly.

“How?””

Elijah looked at Victor.

That was enough.

I turned.

“You knew too.””

Victor didn’t answer.

“Answer me.””

His jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

The word landed like a punch.

I stared at the man who had walked into my wedding claiming to know the truth.

“You knew there was another child.””

“Yes.””

“And you let us live our entire lives without knowing?””

Victor’s expression changed.

“You don’t understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

He looked at the guests.

The chapel.

The decorations.

The wedding arch.

Everything that was supposed to represent a beginning now looked like a trap.

“Not here.””

I laughed.

A bitter laugh.

“You’re still saying that?””

Victor said nothing.

I stepped closer.

“No more private conversations. No more hidden rooms. No more deciding what I can handle.””

My voice shook.

“You all took years from me.””

Elijah looked down.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Even Victor looked away.

Finally, Evelyn spoke.

“His name is Caleb.””

The room became still.

I looked at her.

“Our brother?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“What happened to him?””

Her face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

“He was different.””

I frowned.

“Different how?””

She looked at Elijah.

Then at me.

“Caleb was the first child your father lost.””

Elijah’s expression hardened.

“What does that mean?””

Evelyn took a slow breath.

“It means your father didn’t know how to protect all of you.””

“That doesn’t answer anything,” I said.

“No.””

Her voice became softer.

“It doesn’t.””

She looked at the photograph.

“Your father believed Caleb was dangerous.””

The word hung in the air.

Dangerous.

I looked at Victor.

“You’re saying our own brother was dangerous?””

Victor finally spoke.

“He was manipulated.””

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your father.””

Everyone turned.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

But she continued.

“Daniel, I found records before I met you.””

“What records?””

“Medical records. Financial records. Letters.””

My chest tightened.

“And?””

She swallowed.

“Your father wasn’t just hiding Caleb.””

She looked at Elijah.

“He was controlling him.””

Elijah stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Elijah shook his head.

“My father abandoned me.””

His voice cracked.

“He didn’t control me.””

Nobody corrected him.

Because maybe they couldn’t.

Maybe everyone had their own version of the truth.

I looked at Victor.

“Where is Caleb now?””

Silence.

Then Victor answered.

“I don’t know.””

I stared.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“It’s the truth.””

“You knew about him.””

“Yes.””

“You knew he was watching us.””

“Yes.””

“And you don’t know where he is?””

Victor looked frustrated.

“He disappeared years ago.””

“When?””

“The same year your father died.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

The year my childhood ended.

The year everyone told me everything was over.

I looked at the photograph again.

The hidden figure.

The missing brother.

The secret that had followed us for decades.

My phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Another message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT THE TRUTH.

Then another message appeared.

A location.

No address.

Just a room number.

Inside the chapel.

I looked around.

My blood went cold.

Because the room number belonged to a place I knew.

The bridal preparation room.

The room where Vanessa had gotten ready.

I slowly looked at her.

Her face turned pale.

“What?””

I held up the phone.

“You weren’t alone in that room this morning.””

Her breathing changed.

“No.””

“You found something there.””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I found the photograph.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You found more.””

Her silence confirmed it.

“What else?””

She looked toward the preparation room.

Then whispered:

“A letter.””

My heart started pounding.

“From who?””

She looked at me.

May you like

And said:

“From Caleb.””
