Chapter 6: The Woman Who Knew My Childhood

I forgot how to breathe.

The woman stood at the chapel entrance holding the document like it was a piece of my past.

Like she had been carrying it longer than I had been alive.

Nobody moved.

Not even Raymond.

That scared me.

Because the man who had walked in acting like he knew everything suddenly looked uncertain.

I stared at the woman.

“Who are you?””

Her eyes softened.

“My name is Evelyn.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way she looked at me did.

Like she wasn’t seeing the man standing in front of her.

She was seeing a child.

A child I no longer remembered.

“I knew your father,” she said.

My voice was low.

“Everyone seems to know my father.””

She looked down.

“That’s because he left a lot of damage behind.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Evelyn, you shouldn’t be here.””

The older woman looked at her.

“You shouldn’t have brought him into this without telling him.””

Vanessa flinched.

That was the first time I saw someone speak to Vanessa without fear.

I looked between them.

“You know each other.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

“Of course you do.””

My hands dropped to my sides.

“I’m starting to think everyone knows each other except me.””

Noah looked up at me.

His eyes were tired.

He had been dragged into a nightmare that belonged to adults.

I knelt beside him.

“Hey.””

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry you had to see all this.””

He shook his head.

“I’m not sorry I found the picture.””

That almost broke me.

Because he was right.

If Noah hadn’t found it, I would have signed.

I would have walked out of this chapel believing I understood my life.

Evelyn looked at him.

“You’re brave.””

Noah held my hand.

“I just didn’t want my dad to get hurt.””

The room went quiet.

Even Vanessa looked away.

I stood again.

“Evelyn.””

She met my eyes.

“Tell me the truth.””

She nodded slowly.

“I will.””

“Why did my father separate me and Elijah?””

Her expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Because he discovered someone close to him was planning to destroy the family.””

“Who?””

She looked at the document in her hand.

Then at Raymond.

Then at Vanessa.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, she said:

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

“Then what do you know?””

She walked closer.

“When you and Elijah were children, your father learned that someone wanted access to his company and his money.””

“My father’s company.””

“Yes.””

“And Elijah?””

She looked down.

“Elijah was supposed to inherit half.””

I looked at my brother.

He remained silent.

“Half?””

“Yes.””

The pieces started connecting.

The papers.

The trust.

The hidden photographs.

The wedding.

“Why didn’t anyone tell us?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because your father believed the person responsible would stop searching if they thought Elijah was gone.””

I looked at Elijah.

“And they separated us.””

“Yes.””

My voice became quieter.

“Why me?””

Nobody answered.

Then Elijah did.

“Because you were easier to hide.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

His eyes met mine.

“It means our father chose which son would stay with him.””

The sentence hit harder than anything else.

My father chose.

One son.

Not both.

I looked down.

All my life, I had wondered why my childhood felt incomplete.

Why there were missing pieces.

Why I had dreams about places I had never been.

Maybe my mind remembered something my family erased.

Evelyn handed me the document.

“This is the last thing your father left.””

I took it.

The first page contained legal information.

The second page had a handwritten note.

My father’s handwriting.

I recognized it immediately.

My hands shook.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.

I stopped.

My throat tightened.

There was more.

But before I could continue, Evelyn grabbed my wrist.

“Don’t read the rest here.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

Her face turned pale.

“Because the person your father was afraid of…”

She looked toward the chapel doors.

“…is already inside.””

Everyone turned.

The doors were still closed.

But the handle slowly began to move.

Once.

Twice.

Then a voice came from the other side.

A voice that made Elijah step backward.

A voice that made Vanessa cover her mouth.

A voice that sounded like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.

“Daniel…”

The door opened slightly.

“And Elijah…”

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“You finally found each other.””
