Chapter 14: The Truth Written in Blood

The sentence hung in the air.

You don’t know who your real father is.

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes a lie is so impossible that your mind refuses to accept it.

I looked at Caleb.

Then Victor.

Then my mother.

“No.””

Caleb’s voice was quiet.

But I heard the pain.

“Don’t.””

Victor tightened his grip on the document.

“You deserve to know.””

My mother stepped forward.

“Victor, stop.””

“No.””

His calm finally disappeared.

“No more secrets.””

I almost laughed.

The words sounded ridiculous coming from him.

A man who had spent decades hiding the truth.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Victor looked at me.

“You think your father was the victim?””

I didn’t answer.

“Your father built everything on a lie.””

Caleb stared.

“Shut up.””

Victor ignored him.

“Your mother knows.””

I turned.

My mother looked away.

That was the answer.

My chest tightened.

“Mom?””

She closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

But they hurt more than anything.

I looked at Caleb.

“Is it true?””

He didn’t answer.

That scared me.

Because Caleb had always answered.

Even when the truth was ugly.

“Caleb.””

His eyes met mine.

“I don’t know.””

The anger disappeared from his face.

For the first time, I saw something else.

Fear.

Victor held up the document.

“This proves everything.””

My mother shook her head.

“No.””

Victor smiled.

“You still protect them.””

“Because they are children.””

The words made everyone stop.

Children.

Even after all these years.

She still saw us that way.

Victor opened the document.

“Your father wasn’t your biological father.””

Silence.

My ears rang.

I looked at Elijah.

His face was empty.

At Caleb.

His hands were shaking.

At my mother.

Crying.

Victor continued.

“He raised three sons who were not connected by blood.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

Victor looked at me.

“Your father loved you.””

The sentence confused me.

“If that’s true, why tell me?””

“Because he knew the truth.””

My breathing became uneven.

“What truth?””

Victor looked at Caleb.

“He knew Caleb was the only one who carried his blood.””

Everyone froze.

Caleb.

The room seemed to tilt.

Elijah whispered:

“No.””

Victor nodded.

“Your father knew.””

Caleb stared.

“Then why did he abandon me?””

Victor’s face softened slightly.

“Because he didn’t.””

Nobody understood.

Victor looked at my mother.

“She did.””

My mother broke.

“No.””

“You chose Daniel.””

My mother covered her face.

“No.””

“You chose the child who needed protection.””

Caleb stepped backward.

“You’re lying.””

Victor shook his head.

“I wish I was.””

The chapel became unbearable.

I looked at my mother.

“Tell me.””

She didn’t answer.

“Mom.””

Her tears fell.

“I didn’t know what to do.””

The words were small.

“I had three children.””

She looked at us.

“And I was told one of them would be taken.””

My voice was barely audible.

“Who told you?””

She looked at Victor.

My stomach dropped.

Victor.

“You?””

He didn’t deny it.

“I was trying to save the family.””

Caleb laughed.

A broken sound.

“You destroyed it.””

Victor looked at him.

“I was trying to prevent something worse.””

“What?””

Victor looked toward the doors.

And whispered:

“The person who wanted all of you gone.””

Before anyone could ask, the chapel doors slammed shut.

Everyone turned.

A man stood outside the glass.

Watching.

My breath stopped.

The same face.

The same scar.

The same impossible reflection from the photograph.

But older.

Different.

Another version of us.

My mother whispered:

“No.””

Caleb stared.

His face lost all color.

“Father.””

The man smiled.

And raised one hand against the glass.

Not waving.

Warning.

Then every screen in the chapel turned on.

The wedding slideshow disappeared.

A video began playing.

A man’s voice filled the room.

A voice I recognized immediately.

My father.

“If you are watching this…”

Everyone froze.

The recording continued.

“…then my sons have finally found each other.””

I stared at the screen.

My dead father looked back at me.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

“I failed to protect you.””

The image shook slightly.

“But I never stopped trying.””

The screen went black.

One sentence appeared.

THE FOURTH SON IS THE KEY.

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone understood.

The man outside.

The one who looked like us.

May you like

Wasn’t the end of the secret.

He was another piece.
