Chapter 3: The Man Who Had My Face

Nobody moved.

Not Vanessa.

Not me.

Not a single guest sitting in the wedding chapel.

The man standing by the entrance looked impossible.

Like a memory that had walked out of an old photograph.

I stared at him.

Every detail matched.

The eyes.

The face.

The scar above his eyebrow.

My scar.

My hands went cold.

“No,” I whispered.

The man tilted his head.

“You always did that.””

I swallowed.

“Did what?””

“Denied things before you understood them.””

His voice was familiar.

That was the worst part.

Not his face.

Not the scar.

The voice.

Somewhere deep inside me, something recognized him.

Something I couldn’t explain.

I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn’t shocked.

That was all I needed to see.

She knew.

She had known he was coming.

“You knew he was alive,” I said.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The man walked slowly into the chapel.

The guests moved away from him.

Nobody knew what to do.

A wedding was supposed to have a groom, a bride, and a celebration.

Nobody expected a ghost from the past.

Especially one who looked exactly like the groom.

Noah grabbed my hand.

“Dad…”

I squeezed his fingers.

“I’m here.””

But I wasn’t sure if I was saying it for him or for myself.

The man stopped a few feet away.

“My name is Elijah.””

The name hit me strangely.

Like a word from a dream.

I shook my head.

“My brother died.””

Elijah looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.””

My chest tightened.

“Who is they?””

He smiled sadly.

“That’s the question you should have asked years ago.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Elijah, stop.””

His eyes moved toward her.

The warmth disappeared instantly.

“You don’t get to tell me when to stop.””

The guests whispered louder.

I noticed something.

Fear.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Vanessa was afraid of him.

But she was also afraid of me knowing the truth.

I looked between them.

“How do you two know each other?””

Neither answered.

That silence told me everything.

I walked toward Vanessa.

“Two years.””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Two years you were in my life.””

My voice cracked.

“You met my son. You ate dinner at my house. You slept next to me. You planned this wedding.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

“And all that time, you knew.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“That sentence means nothing anymore.””

Elijah looked at the papers on the table.

Then his expression changed.

“You were about to sign?””

I turned.

“How do you know about the papers?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Noah.

The way he looked at my son made me uncomfortable.

Not because he seemed dangerous.

Because he seemed sad.

“I’m sorry,” Elijah said softly.

Noah stepped closer to me.

“Why are you sorry?””

Elijah looked at him.

“Because you were the one who found the truth.””

Vanessa moved quickly.

“Enough.””

Her voice was sharp.

Everyone noticed.

The bride who had been calm all morning was gone.

“Daniel, you need to leave with me.””

I stared at her.

“Leave with you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked around.

“Because if he is here, then everything has changed.””

The words bothered me.

Everything.

Not something.

Everything.

I picked up the document again.

The paper shook slightly in my hand.

“What is this?””

Elijah’s face became serious.

“Don’t sign anything else.””

I looked at him.

“You’re not exactly helping me trust you.””

“I know.””

“Then explain.””

He looked down.

For a moment, he looked less like a stranger and more like the brother I had never known.

“I can explain why Vanessa had my photograph.””

My heart raced.

“Then explain.””

He took one step closer.

“But first, you need to understand one thing.””

The chapel became silent again.

“What?””

Elijah looked directly into my eyes.

“The man in that photograph wasn’t the only person Vanessa was hiding from you.””

I felt Noah’s hand tighten around mine.

I looked at Vanessa.

She was frozen.

Then I looked back at Elijah.

“What else did she hide?””

He reached into his jacket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And pulled out a second photograph.

An older one.

One I had never seen before.

His fingers moved toward me.

But before he handed it over, Vanessa whispered:

“Daniel, don’t look at that.””

I stopped.

Because the fear in her voice wasn’t an act.

It was real.

Elijah looked at me.

And said:

“If you see this picture, there’s no going back.””

Then he turned the photograph around.

And I saw the person standing beside two young brothers.

May you like

The person I never expected to be connected to this mystery.

My father.
