Chapter 5: The Stranger With My Father’s File

I had imagined a thousand ways my wedding day could go wrong.

A broken ring.

A missed speech.

A nervous mistake during the vows.

I never imagined standing beneath a wedding arch while a stranger told me my dead father had left behind secrets that could destroy my family.

The man in the dark suit didn’t look nervous.

That bothered me.

Everyone else in the chapel looked terrified.

He looked prepared.

“Who are you?”” I asked again.

He reached inside his jacket.

Noah immediately stepped closer to me.

I placed my arm around him.

The man noticed.

Good.

Because I wanted him to know exactly who I would protect.

“My name is Raymond Ellis.””

He pulled out a leather folder.

“I represent the Carter family trust.””

I stared at him.

“There is no Carter family trust.””

Raymond looked at Elijah.

Then back at me.

“There was.””

Elijah’s jaw tightened.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Raymond gave a small smile.

“That makes two of us.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Raymond…”

The way she said his name made my stomach turn.

Another connection.

Another secret.

I looked at her.

“You know him too?””

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked exhausted.

“Yes.””

The answer barely left her mouth.

I felt something break inside me.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“How many people have been part of my life without me knowing?””

Nobody spoke.

Raymond opened the folder.

Inside were old documents.

Photographs.

Legal papers.

My name appeared on several pages.

My hands tightened.

“What is this?””

“Your inheritance.””

I almost laughed.

“My father died owing money.””

Raymond shook his head.

“That was the story.””

“The story?””

“Yes.””

He removed a document.

“Your father was not bankrupt when he died.””

I stared at the paper.

“Then why did everyone say he was?””

Raymond looked at Elijah.

“Because someone needed Daniel to believe he had nothing.””

A wave of anger moved through me.

I looked at Elijah.

“Someone?””

He looked away.

That was not an answer.

“Who?””

Silence.

Then Raymond spoke.

“Your uncle.””

I froze.

“My father didn’t have a brother.””

Raymond’s expression didn’t change.

“He did.””

The chapel blurred.

Another family member.

Another person hidden from me.

How many more?

Noah looked up at me.

“Dad?””

I forced myself to focus.

“I’m okay.””

But I wasn’t.

I looked at Raymond.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because you were about to sign away your rights.””

I looked at the marriage papers.

The attached document.

The signature line.

“What rights?””

Raymond pointed at the paper.

“The Carter family trust.””

My heart stopped.

“You’re saying Vanessa was trying to take my inheritance?””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, Daniel.””

“Then explain.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

I looked at her.

“You expect me to believe that?””

She looked devastated.

But I couldn’t tell if I was seeing guilt or sadness.

“I found the documents because I was trying to understand what happened to your brother.””

Elijah looked at her.

“You should have told him.””

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Her silence answered.

I looked at Elijah.

“You trusted her?””

“No.””

The response was immediate.

That surprised me.

“Then why work with her?””

His face hardened.

“Because she was the only person who could get close enough to find the truth.””

I stared at Vanessa.

The woman who was supposed to become my wife.

The woman who knew my brother was alive.

The woman who brought hidden papers to my wedding.

“I was a mission.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“Then what was I?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The answer hurt more than anything.

Because sometimes silence tells you exactly what you need to know.

Raymond closed the folder.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“Of course there is.””

He didn’t react.

“Your father didn’t separate you and Elijah because he wanted to hide one son.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Then why?””

Raymond looked toward Noah.

Then back at me.

“He was trying to protect one of you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“One of us from what?””

Before Raymond could answer, the lights in the chapel flickered.

Everyone looked upward.

The bright room went dark for two seconds.

Then came back.

And when the lights returned, the document on the table was gone.

I turned.

“No.””

Vanessa looked around.

“I didn’t take it.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Noah pointed toward the aisle.

“Dad.””

I followed his finger.

Someone was standing near the chapel exit.

Holding the missing document.

A woman.

An older Black woman.

A woman I had never seen before.

She looked directly at me.

And whispered:

“Daniel Carter…”

My heart stopped.

Because I recognized her voice.

Not from meeting her.

From childhood.

From a memory I thought was impossible.

May you like

She smiled sadly.

“I’m the woman your father paid to keep you alive.””
