Chapter 13: The Mother Who Chose Silence

Nobody moved.

Not Caleb.

Not me.

Not even my mother.

After twenty years of believing she was gone, I finally had her standing in front of me.

Alive.

Breathing.

Real.

But instead of running toward her, I stood frozen.

Because the hardest truth to accept was this:

Sometimes the person you miss the most is also the person who hurt you the deepest.

My mother looked older than the memories I carried.

Her hair was streaked with gray.

Her face had the lines of someone who had spent years carrying a secret too heavy for one person.

But her eyes were the same.

The same eyes I had seen in old photographs.

The same eyes I had spent years trying to remember.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

My throat tightened.

“Don’t.””

The word surprised even me.

Her expression broke.

“I know you’re angry.””

“Angry?””

I laughed quietly.

The sound came out broken.

“You disappeared.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I know.””

“You let me grow up thinking I had no family.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

I stepped forward.

“No, you don’t.””

My voice shook.

“You don’t know what that did to me.””

The chapel was silent.

Everyone watched.

But for once, I didn’t care.

I wasn’t performing for anyone.

I wasn’t trying to stay calm.

I was speaking to the woman who was supposed to be there when I needed her.

“I remembered your voice,” I said.

My mother looked at me.

“I remembered a song you used to sing.””

Her lips trembled.

“I remembered your perfume.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And every year, I wondered why you left.””

She covered her mouth.

“Daniel…”

“Why?””

The question came out softer.

More painful.

“Why did you leave me?””

She closed her eyes.

And when she opened them, I saw something I had never seen before.

Shame.

“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””

I looked away.

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

She nodded.

“Because everyone failed.””

The honesty stopped me.

My mother looked at Caleb.

Then Elijah.

Then me.

“Your father made a decision years ago.””

Caleb’s face hardened.

“Don’t.””

She looked at him.

“I have to.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You don’t get to tell him.””

My mother stepped closer.

“I should have told him from the beginning.””

Caleb laughed bitterly.

“Like you told us anything?””

The pain between them was immediate.

I looked at Caleb.

“You knew her?””

He didn’t answer.

My mother did.

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“All three of you were my sons.””

The words were simple.

But they destroyed something inside me.

All three.

Not one.

Not two.

Three.

My family had existed.

And someone had decided to erase it.

My mother continued.

“Your father believed Caleb was a threat.””

Caleb looked away.

“He wasn’t.””

The statement shocked everyone.

Even Victor.

My mother shook her head.

“Caleb was a child who was hurt.””

Caleb’s expression changed.

“You said I was dangerous.””

“I was afraid.””

His eyes hardened.

“You were afraid of me.””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I was afraid of what they were doing to you.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

My mother took a deep breath.

“When your father discovered someone was trying to control the family business, he started looking for the person responsible.””

“Who?””

She looked at Victor.

The entire room went still.

Victor’s face changed.

“No.””

My mother nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at my uncle.

“You?””

Victor didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You were behind it?””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand that everyone keeps saying that.””

My mother looked at me.

“Victor wasn’t the only person involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Caleb stepped forward.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face was different now.

Not angry.

Determined.

“The person who destroyed our family wasn’t trying to steal money.””

He looked at me.

“They were trying to erase us.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

Caleb looked at the three of us.

“Because our father discovered something.””

“What?””

He took a breath.

“He discovered we weren’t the only children.””

The room went silent.

My heart sank.

“What?””

My mother looked devastated.

“No.””

Caleb nodded.

“There was another secret.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“Another?””

He looked at the three of us.

“Someone erased an entire branch of our family.””

Victor suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He grabbed the document from the table.

My mother shouted:

“Victor!””

Everyone turned.

Victor backed toward the door.

“You were never supposed to know this.””

I stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

He shook his head.

“You have no idea what you’re opening.””

Caleb moved toward him.

“Neither did you.””

Victor looked at Caleb.

And for the first time, he looked afraid.

Then he said something that made everyone freeze.

“Caleb…”

May you like

A pause.

“You don’t know who your real father is.””
