Chapter 12: The Brother Who Wanted My Life

I should have ignored the message.

Every instinct told me to.

A person who had spent years hiding from the world was now inviting me to meet him.

Alone.

At the altar.

On my wedding day.

It was obviously a trap.

But there was something stronger than fear.

A need to know.

I had spent my entire life living inside a story written by other people.

My father.

My uncle.

Vanessa.

Even Elijah.

Everyone had made choices for me.

I was done.

“I’m going.””

Everyone reacted immediately.

“No.””

The word came from Vanessa.

Then Elijah.

Then Victor.

Three different voices.

One warning.

I looked at them.

“Funny.””

They stopped.

“All of you spent years keeping me away from the truth.””

I held up the phone.

“Now I finally have a chance to meet the person at the center of it.””

Elijah stepped closer.

“You don’t know what he wants.””

“You don’t either.””

That hurt him.

Because it was true.

Elijah had spent his life searching for Caleb.

But he never found him.

I looked at Noah.

He was standing near Marcus.

Quiet.

Watching.

I walked toward him.

“Noah.””

He looked up.

“Are you going?””

I hesitated.

A child shouldn’t understand this much fear.

But Noah had always understood more than people gave him credit for.

“I have to.””

He nodded.

Then reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the old photograph.

The one that started everything.

“Take this.””

I looked at it.

“Why?””

“Because this is what started the truth.””

I smiled sadly.

“You found it.””

He nodded.

“So maybe you should have it.””

I hugged him.

For one second, everything disappeared.

No secrets.

No lies.

No missing brothers.

Just my son.

Then I walked toward the altar.

Alone.

The chapel had emptied.

Guests had been moved outside.

Only a few people remained.

Elijah.

Vanessa.

Victor.

Evelyn.

And me.

The message had said come to the altar.

So I stood there.

The same place where I was supposed to promise forever.

Instead, I waited for a stranger who shared my blood.

Minutes passed.

Nothing.

Then the chapel lights turned off.

Only the emergency lights remained.

A figure appeared at the back.

My heart stopped.

He walked forward slowly.

Same face.

Same scar.

Same eyes.

But different.

The man looked like me if I had grown up angry.

If I had spent my life carrying hatred instead of love.

Caleb stopped several feet away.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he smiled.

“You look just like me.””

My voice was quiet.

“So do you.””

He laughed softly.

“Do you know how many times I imagined this moment?””

I didn’t answer.

“Thousands.””

He looked around the chapel.

“Your wedding.””

His eyes moved to the papers.

“The perfect life.””

I watched him carefully.

“What do you want?””

He looked surprised.

“That’s your first question?””

“Yes.””

He nodded slowly.

“Father was right.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about him like you knew him.””

Caleb’s expression changed.

“I knew him better than you.””

“That’s not possible.””

“It is.””

He stepped closer.

“Because he never lied to me about who he was.””

The words hit.

“What does that mean?””

Caleb looked toward the wedding arch.

“He loved you.””

I frowned.

“That’s what this is about?””

“No.””

His eyes darkened.

“He loved you more.””

Silence.

“He chose you.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

He looked at Elijah.

Then back at me.

“You got the childhood.””

“You got the father.””

“You got the normal life.””

His voice became colder.

“I got everything he was ashamed of.””

Elijah stepped forward.

“Caleb.””

Caleb looked at him.

“You.””

The word was filled with pain.

“You were always the one who searched.””

Elijah stopped.

Caleb smiled sadly.

“You thought I disappeared.””

A pause.

“I didn’t.””

My heart raced.

“Where were you?””

Caleb looked at me.

“Watching.””

The answer chilled me.

“All these years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

“I needed to know if you deserved what he gave you.””

I stared.

“And?””

Caleb looked at the marriage papers.

At Vanessa.

At Noah.

Then back at me.

“I still haven’t decided.””

Before I could respond, the chapel doors opened.

A person entered.

Someone none of us expected.

Someone who changed Caleb’s expression instantly.

Someone who made Victor step backward.

My mother.

Alive.

Standing at the entrance.

She looked at me.

Then at Caleb.

And whispered:

“Please.””

Her voice broke.

“Don’t make the same mistake your father made.””

Caleb froze.

May you like

Because for the first time…

He looked afraid.
