Chapter 9: The Mother Who Was Never Gone

I stood in the middle of my wedding chapel holding a dead phone.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Because everyone had heard the same thing.
My mother.
Alive.
Somewhere.
After all these years.
The woman I buried in my memories.
The woman whose voice I had forgotten.
The woman everyone told me I lost.
Was alive.
Noah looked up at me.
“Dad?””
I looked at him.
I wanted to answer.
I wanted to tell him everything was okay.
But I couldn’t.
Because for the first time in my life, I had no idea what was real.
Victor stepped forward.
“Daniel.””
I looked at him.
And I saw something I never expected.
Fear.
Not anger.
Not confidence.
Fear.
“You need to understand what you heard.””
I laughed quietly.
“What I heard?””
My voice broke.
“I heard my dead mother.””
Victor’s expression hardened.
“She is not—”
“Don’t.””
The word stopped him.
“You don’t get to explain my life to me anymore.””
Elijah stood beside me.
For once, we were on the same side.
“Where is she?””
Victor looked at him.
“You should have stayed away.””
Elijah’s face changed.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“You knew she was alive.””
Victor said nothing.
That was enough.
Elijah moved toward him.
“You let me believe I was abandoned.””
Victor’s voice became colder.
“You survived.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It is the only one that matters.””
I stepped between them.
“No more.””
Both men looked at me.
“I want the truth.””
Victor stared.
“You’re not ready.””
I shook my head.
“That’s what everyone says.””
I looked around the chapel.
“My entire life, people decided what I could handle.””
I pointed at the photograph.
“My father.””
I pointed at Vanessa.
“My wife.””
I looked at Elijah.
“My brother.””
Then Victor.
“My uncle.””
My voice became louder.
“I’m done being protected.””
Nobody responded.
Because they knew I meant it.
Vanessa slowly walked toward me.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“I know you hate me.””
I didn’t answer.
“I deserve that.””
The honesty surprised me.
She wiped her tears.
“But I need you to know something.””
“What?””
“I never wanted you to sign those papers because of the inheritance.””
I stared.
“Then why?””
Her eyes moved to Noah.
“Because if you signed them, you would legally become vulnerable.””
My forehead tightened.
“Vulnerable to who?””
She looked at Victor.
The answer was clear.
I turned.
“Victor?””
He didn’t react.
That scared me.
“Explain.””
Victor looked at me.
“Your father made enemies.””
“My father is dead.””
“His enemies are not.””
The chapel lights flickered again.
Everyone looked upward.
This time, nobody was surprised.
We were all waiting for the next disaster.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One photograph.
I stared.
It was recent.
Not old.
Not faded.
A picture taken inside this chapel.
A picture of me.
Standing at the signing table.
Before Noah ran toward me.
Before everything collapsed.
Someone had been watching us.
The message underneath said:
YOU SHOULD HAVE SIGNED.
My heart raced.
I showed the phone to Elijah.
His face changed.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
He pointed at the corner of the image.
There was a reflection in the chapel window.
A person standing outside.
Watching.
I zoomed in.
My blood went cold.
Because the person in the reflection looked exactly like me.
Same face.
Same build.
Same scar.
But it wasn’t Elijah.
It wasn’t me.
A third person.
Victor stepped closer.
“What did you find?””
I looked at him.
“You tell me.””
He stared at the image.
And for the first time, Victor Carter looked completely shocked.
“No.””
Evelyn moved closer.
“What is it?””
Victor whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I held up the phone.
“Who is he?””
Nobody answered.
Then my mother’s voice echoed through the phone.
A voicemail had arrived.
It played automatically.
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel, listen carefully.””
Everyone froze.
“You were never separated from one brother.””
My breath stopped.
My mother continued.
“There were three of you.””
The chapel went silent.
Elijah looked at me.
Victor looked terrified.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
May you like
And then my mother whispered the final words:
“Your third brother is the one who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””
