Chapter 11: The Stranger At The Wedding
The ballroom doors opened slowly.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
A man stepped inside.
Older.
Well-dressed.
Wearing a dark suit with a silver tie.
He didn’t look surprised.
He looked prepared.
Marcus immediately recognized the last name on the invitation list.
Carter.
The man looked around the room.
At the guests.
At the documents.
At Evelyn.
Then at Marcus.
“Well,” he said calmly.
“I see the truth finally arrived.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The man smiled slightly.
“Your uncle.””
The answer landed like another explosion.
Marcus stared.
“I don’t have an uncle.””
The man walked farther into the ballroom.
“That’s because your father made sure you didn’t know about us.””
Danielle moved beside Marcus.
“Identify yourself.””
The man looked at her.
“Richard Carter.””
Evelyn’s face went completely pale.
Marcus noticed.
“You know him.””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
Her silence was enough.
Richard looked at her.
“Still protecting him?””
Evelyn’s voice was cold.
“Leave.””
Richard laughed softly.
“You always were good at pretending you had power.””
Marcus looked between them.
“What is going on?””
Richard stopped.
“You want the truth?””
Marcus stared.
“Yes.””
Richard nodded.
“Then ask Evelyn why your father left you with her.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Answer me.””
Evelyn looked away.
Richard smiled.
“Because your father knew she would do anything to keep you.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“That doesn’t answer the question.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Your father was afraid.””
“Of what?””
Richard looked directly at him.
“Of losing control.””
The words felt familiar.
Too familiar.
Marcus looked at Danielle.
“Is that true?””
She didn’t answer.
Richard continued.
“Your father built his whole life around appearances. The perfect family. The perfect business. The perfect reputation.””
He looked at the destroyed wedding scene.
“Seems fitting that the truth came out at a wedding.””
Marcus ignored the comment.
“Why were my records changed?””
Richard smiled.
“Because your father asked someone to do it.””
Evelyn immediately stepped forward.
“Stop lying.””
Richard looked at her.
“You know I’m not.””
Marcus watched their faces.
There was history there.
Pain.
Anger.
Something much deeper.
“Did you help him?””
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“No.””
A pause.
“Did I know what he was doing?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked sick.
“So everyone knew.””
Nobody answered.
He laughed quietly.
“Everyone knew.””
I stepped closer to him.
“Marcus.””
He looked at me.
His eyes were filled with pain.
“I married you today thinking I knew my family.””
He looked around.
“I don’t even know my own name anymore.””
I held his hand.
“You do.””
He looked at me.
“You are still you.””
For a moment, he believed me.
Then Richard spoke.
“There is one thing you should know.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Richard reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
Not old.
Not damaged.
New.
“This was delivered to me this morning.””
Danielle immediately stepped forward.
“By who?””
Richard looked at Marcus.
“Your father.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He handed him the envelope.
“That’s the problem.””
Marcus took it.
His hands shook.
Inside was a single page.
He unfolded it.
The first line made him stop.
I watched his expression change.
“What does it say?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus?””
He looked up.
His face was filled with disbelief.
Then he read the sentence aloud.
“My son, if you are reading this, it means I am still alive.””
Nobody breathed.
The entire ballroom froze.
Evelyn whispered:
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled with fear.
“I thought he was dead.””
Richard stepped closer.
“That’s what he wanted everyone to believe.””
Marcus looked back at the letter.
The handwriting.
The signature.
His father.
Alive.
The man who had supposedly died years ago.
The man whose secrets had destroyed his family.
Was still somewhere in the world.
Then another line caught Marcus’s attention.
And his face went completely white.
Because his father’s letter ended with one warning:
“Do not trust the woman standing beside you.””
Marcus slowly looked up.
May you like
Everyone followed his eyes.
Toward me.
