Chapter 12: The Accusation
The moment Marcus looked at me, my heart stopped.
Not because I believed him.
Because I knew he was scared.
And fear can make people see enemies everywhere.
“Marcus,” I whispered.
He looked down at the letter.
Then back at me.
The pain in his eyes hurt more than anger.
“Nia…”
I shook my head.
“No.””
He closed his eyes.
Like he hated even considering it.
“I don’t know what to believe.””
The words cut.
But I understood.
His entire life had been built on lies.
Everyone had hidden something.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had an explanation.
And now I was suddenly part of the mystery.
Danielle stepped forward.
“Marcus, the letter needs context.””
Richard nodded.
“She’s right.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew?””
Richard looked uncomfortable.
“I knew your father was afraid.””
“Afraid of Nia?””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at the letter.
“Afraid of what would happen if you found out who she really was.””
I stared.
“What?””
Marcus turned toward me.
“Nia.””
His voice was quiet.
“Do you know my father?””
I felt my chest tighten.
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
“I have never met him.””
Richard watched me carefully.
“Are you sure?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
Then I turned to Marcus.
“I love you.””
His expression softened.
For one second.
Then the doubt returned.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Marcus, don’t do this.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at me.
For the first time, Evelyn wasn’t attacking me.
She was defending me.
“She doesn’t know anything.””
Marcus looked surprised.
“You’re defending her?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Because for once, I know the truth.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus stared.
“What truth?””
Evelyn looked at me.
Then at him.
“Nia was never part of this.””
Danielle frowned.
“Then why would his father write that?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus looked at the letter again.
His fingers moved down the page.
“There’s more.””
Everyone turned.
He continued reading.
“My son, if Nia is with you, understand that she is not the danger. She is the proof.””
Marcus stopped.
“Proof of what?””
The letter continued.
“She is the reason I know you are ready to learn the truth.””
Marcus looked confused.
Richard’s expression changed.
“That’s not what I expected.””
Danielle took a step closer.
Marcus did.
“My biggest mistake was believing I could control the consequences of my choices.””
He swallowed.
“I hurt people trying to protect myself.””
A long pause.
“But there is one person who knows the entire story.””
Marcus looked at the bottom.
A name was written.
He read it.
And everyone froze.
“Richard Carter.””
Richard’s face changed.
The confidence disappeared.
Marcus looked up.
“You know everything.””
Richard said nothing.
Marcus stepped closer.
“You knew about Amara.””
Silence.
“You knew about Evelyn.””
Silence.
“You knew about my father.””
Richard finally looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer was terrifying.
Marcus’s voice lowered.
“Then tell me.””
Richard looked around the ballroom.
At the broken wedding.
At the people whose lives had been destroyed by secrets.
Then he said:
“Your father didn’t abandon you.””
Marcus waited.
“He was running.””
“From who?””
Richard looked directly at Evelyn.
Everyone followed his eyes.
Evelyn’s face went pale.
“No.””
Richard continued.
“He discovered someone was trying to erase Marcus’s identity completely.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why?””
Richard looked at him.
“Because someone wanted Marcus gone.””
The words chilled the room.
“Not separated.””
“Not hidden.””
“Gone.””
I felt Marcus’s hand tighten.
“Who?””
Richard looked at the documents.
The photographs.
The people gathered around him.
Then he whispered:
“The person responsible…”
A pause.
“…is someone Marcus trusted his entire life.””
The ballroom doors suddenly slammed shut.
Every guest turned.
The lights flickered.
And from somewhere near the entrance…
A voice spoke.
“Richard.””
Everyone froze.
Because the voice was familiar.
And Marcus knew it.
May you like
The voice belonged to the man who was supposed to be dead.
His father.
