Chapter 14: The Final Piece Of The Family Secret

Marcus stared at the photograph.

Nobody spoke.

The image shook slightly in his hand.

I stepped closer.

“Who is that?””

He didn’t answer.

His eyes were locked on the picture.

A young woman.

Standing beside a newborn baby.

The baby had a small bracelet.

A bracelet Marcus had seen before.

The same bracelet his father kept in an old box.

The same bracelet Evelyn told him belonged to his first birthday.

Marcus looked at Amara.

Then at the photograph.

“Is this…”

His voice broke.

Amara nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus swallowed.

“That’s me.””

“Yes.””

For the first time that day, Marcus looked less angry.

More lost.

He looked at the baby in the picture.

A child who had been loved by so many people.

And protected by so many lies.

His father stepped closer.

“She was trying to keep you safe.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Who?””

His father looked toward Amara.

“Your grandmother.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus frowned.

“My grandmother?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

His father continued.

“Your grandmother discovered what Richard was doing.””

Richard immediately shook his head.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“No.””

His father looked at him.

“It’s the truth.””

The room became silent.

“She found evidence of the financial crimes. She was going to expose everything.””

Marcus looked at Danielle.

“Was this in the documents?””

Danielle shook her head.

“No.””

Richard laughed bitterly.

“Because some things were buried too well.””

Marcus looked at his uncle.

“You threatened my family.””

Richard’s face hardened.

“I protected my family.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice was calm now.

That was somehow more frightening.

“You protected yourself.””

Richard looked away.

Because he knew Marcus was right.

Amara walked closer.

“I spent years thinking I lost you because I wasn’t enough.””

Her voice trembled.

“But the truth was never about me.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“Or you.””

Then at Richard.

“It was about someone wanting power.””

Evelyn wiped her tears.

“I should have told Marcus.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

No excuses.

No defense.

Just regret.

“I was afraid he would hate me.””

Marcus was quiet.

“I did.””

The honesty hurt.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“But I also understand why you did it.””

Her eyes opened.

That surprised her.

Marcus continued.

“You were wrong.””

She nodded.

“But you loved me.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

He looked at Amara.

“And you loved me.””

Amara nodded.

“More than anything.””

Marcus looked at his father.

“And you loved me.””

His father lowered his head.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked around.

A lifetime of secrets.

A wedding ruined.

A family broken.

But somehow, for the first time, everything was finally honest.

Then Danielle cleared her throat.

“There is still one problem.””

Everyone turned.

She held up the forged document.

“Richard may not be the only person involved.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

She pointed at the signature.

“The person who created this had access to private family records.””

Richard looked confused.

“I didn’t create that.””

Danielle looked at him.

“I believe you.””

Everyone reacted.

Marcus frowned.

“Then who did?””

Danielle looked at the document again.

“I found something.””

She pulled out a magnifying glass from her bag.

The ballroom watched as she examined the page.

Then she pointed.

“Here.””

Marcus stepped closer.

A small mark was hidden near the signature.

A symbol.

A family seal.

But not the Carter family seal.

Marcus looked confused.

“What is that?””

His father’s face changed.

Because he recognized it.

“No.””

Marcus turned.

“What?””

His father stared at the symbol.

“That belongs to someone else.””

“Who?””

The man looked at the symbol.

Then slowly looked toward the wedding guests.

Everyone followed his eyes.

And Marcus realized something terrifying.

The person behind the final secret…

Had been invited to his wedding.

His father whispered:

“The person who changed your life…”

May you like

A pause.

“…is standing in this room.””
