Chapter 5: The Photograph No One Wanted Found
The woman at the ballroom entrance didn’t walk in like someone who was interrupting a wedding.
She walked in like someone who had been waiting years for this moment.
She held the photograph against her chest.
Her eyes moved across the room.
The guests.
The flowers.
The destroyed braid on the floor.
Then Marcus.
And when she saw him, her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
My stomach tightened.
Marcus noticed it too.
“Who are you?”” he asked.
The woman didn’t answer immediately.
She looked at Evelyn.
“You didn’t tell him.””
Evelyn stood completely still.
“No.””
The woman shook her head.
“No?””
Her voice trembled.
“You still couldn’t do it?””
Marcus looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Danielle stepped closer to him.
“Marcus…”
But he raised his hand.
“No.””
His eyes stayed on the stranger.
“I need answers.””
The woman slowly walked forward.
She wore a simple navy dress, nothing like the luxury gowns surrounding her.
She didn’t look like she belonged at a wedding.
But somehow, she looked like she belonged in this story.
“My name is Claire.””
She stopped a few feet away.
“And I know who you are.””
Marcus swallowed.
“You don’t know me.””
Claire looked at him sadly.
“Yes.””
She held up the photograph.
“I do.””
The room went silent again.
Marcus stared at the picture.
“What is that?””
Claire looked down.
“A piece of your past.””
Evelyn suddenly stepped forward.
“Leave.””
Everyone turned.
Her voice was sharp.
The old Evelyn was back.
Controlled.
Commanding.
“You have no right to come here.””
Claire looked at her.
“No right?””
She laughed softly.
“You took thirty-two years from me.””
Marcus froze.
Thirty-two.
The number hit him.
His age.
The exact years he had lived believing one story.
He looked at Evelyn.
“What does she mean?””
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“Marcus, don’t listen to her.””
Claire looked hurt.
“Still protecting yourself.””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
“Is she in the documents?””
Danielle hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
Marcus turned back.
“She is.””
Nobody denied it.
He walked closer to Claire.
“What is your connection to me?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I knew you before you knew yourself.””
Marcus shook his head.
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Claire looked at the photograph.
Then handed it to him.
He took it slowly.
The moment he saw it, his expression changed.
I watched his fingers tighten around the edges.
Because whatever he saw…
It meant something.
“Where did you get this?”” he whispered.
Claire looked at Evelyn.
“She had it.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Claire nodded.
“Evelyn kept it hidden.””
Evelyn’s voice rose.
“Enough.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Did you?””
She didn’t answer.
That was her answer.
He looked back at the photograph.
“What am I looking at?””
Claire swallowed.
“A picture from the day your life changed.””
Marcus stared.
I stepped beside him.
“Marcus…”
He looked at me.
His eyes were glassy.
“I don’t even know who I am right now.””
My heart broke.
I reached for his hand.
He held onto mine.
The same hand he had held when he promised me forever.
Only now, he wasn’t fighting for our wedding.
He was fighting to understand himself.
Claire looked at him.
“I never stopped looking for you.””
Marcus looked up.
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“After they took you away from me…”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Marcus went completely still.
“Who took me?””
Nobody spoke.
The answer sat between them.
Waiting.
Claire looked at Evelyn.
“She deserves to tell him.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
“Tell me what?””
Evelyn’s face changed.
The anger disappeared.
The control disappeared.
Only fear remained.
And then she said the words that made my blood run cold.
“Marcus…”
May you like
She looked at him like she was saying goodbye.
“You were never supposed to know she survived.””
