Chapter 7: The Call From The Past
The phone kept ringing.
One sound.
Then another.
Then another.
Each ring cut through the ballroom like a warning.
Nobody moved.
Not the guests.
Not the attorney.
Not even Evelyn.
Everyone stared at Danielle’s phone.
Marcus looked at the screen like he was afraid to believe what he was seeing.
“Answer it,” he whispered.
Danielle didn’t move.
“Marcus…”
“Answer it.””
His voice was stronger this time.
Not because he was calm.
Because he needed the truth more than he needed comfort.
Danielle slowly pressed the button.
“Hello?””
At first, there was only silence.
A faint sound of breathing came through the speaker.
Marcus stepped closer.
The entire room watched him.
Then a voice spoke.
A man’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
“Marcus?””
The color drained from his face.
He knew that voice.
Even after years.
Even after death.
“Dad?””
The word escaped before he could stop it.
I felt his hand leave mine.
Not because he wanted to let go.
Because his body forgot everything except that voice.
Danielle held the phone toward him.
“Marcus, it’s for you.””
He took it slowly.
“Dad?””
A pause.
Then the voice answered.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
That was all it took.
One sentence.
One apology.
And suddenly the strong man standing in front of everyone looked like a son again.
“Where are you?”” Marcus asked.
His voice cracked.
The voice on the phone stayed quiet.
“I can’t explain everything.””
Marcus looked around the ballroom.
At the people who had been keeping secrets from him.
“Everyone seems to know something except me.””
“I know.””
“You knew?””
Another silence.
“Yes.””
Marcus gripped the phone tighter.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
The voice trembled.
“Because I failed you.””
Evelyn looked down.
Claire covered her mouth.
I watched Marcus struggle to breathe.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don’t get to say that and disappear.””
“I’m not disappearing.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
The voice continued.
“There is a recording attached to the message I sent Danielle.””
Danielle looked at her phone.
“I received something.””
She quickly checked the screen.
A file appeared.
An audio recording.
Marcus stared.
“Play it.””
Danielle hesitated.
“Are you sure?””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then Claire.
Then me.
“No.””
He swallowed.
“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””
He looked back at Danielle.
“But play it.””
She pressed the file.
A different voice filled the ballroom.
Marcus’s father.
A recording made years earlier.
“My son…”
Everyone became silent.
“If you are hearing this, it means Evelyn could not keep the truth hidden forever.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Marcus stared at her.
The recording continued.
“I need you to know something first. The woman who raised you did love you.””
Marcus’s face tightened.
“But love does not erase what happened.””
Claire began crying silently.
“She made a choice many years ago. A choice that changed three lives.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
The recording paused.
Then continued.
“The first was yours.””
A chill moved through the room.
“The second was Claire’s.””
Claire looked down.
“And the third was mine.””
Marcus whispered:
“Dad…”
The recording continued.
“I spent years trying to repair what I allowed to happen. I should have protected you both. I should have told you sooner.””
Marcus’s eyes filled with tears.
“Both?””
He looked at Claire.
“Both?””
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
“Marcus, your mother is alive.””
The room exploded with whispers.
Marcus stopped moving.
The words hit him harder than anything before.
Your mother is alive.
Evelyn looked at Claire.
Claire looked back.
And in that moment, Marcus saw something.
A connection.
A truth neither woman could hide anymore.
The recording continued.
“But before you meet her, you need to understand why she was gone.””
The audio suddenly distorted.
Everyone looked at the phone.
A loud crackling sound interrupted the message.
Then silence.
Danielle checked the screen.
“The file stopped.””
Marcus looked at her.
“What?””
“It ended.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“That’s impossible.””
Danielle looked confused.
“The recording was incomplete.””
Marcus turned toward Evelyn.
“You knew this was coming.””
She didn’t answer.
“You knew.””
Evelyn finally looked at him.
“Yes.””
The admission hurt more than denial.
Marcus’s voice became quiet.
“How long?””
Evelyn looked away.
“How long did you know she was alive?””
The silence stretched.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Since the day you were born.””
Marcus stepped back.
I covered my mouth.
Claire closed her eyes.
And Evelyn finally said the words she had been avoiding.
“I saw her holding you.””
Marcus stared.
“Then why did you take me?””
Evelyn’s face broke.
And before she could answer…
The ballroom doors opened again.
A woman entered.
Older.
Walking slowly.
Holding onto the doorframe.
Every person turned.
Claire gasped.
Evelyn stopped breathing.
Marcus looked at the woman.
And the woman looked directly at him.
“Marcus…”
May you like
Her voice shook.
“Baby.””
