Chapter 8: The Mother He Never Knew

Nobody in the ballroom spoke.

The woman standing in the doorway looked like she had walked through decades of pain just to reach that one moment.

Marcus stared at her.

Not blinking.

Not breathing.

Like his mind was refusing to accept what his eyes were seeing.

Claire moved first.

She covered her mouth.

“Amara…”

The woman looked at her.

And tears immediately filled both their eyes.

They didn’t run toward each other.

They didn’t hug.

They just stood there.

Two people separated by years of stolen time.

Then Marcus whispered:

“Who is she?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at Evelyn.

Then Claire.

Then the woman.

“I need someone to tell me the truth.””

The woman slowly stepped inside.

Her hands shook.

“My name is Amara Lewis.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Why did you call me baby?””

The question broke her.

Because she had been waiting years to say that word.

And hearing him ask why she had the right to say it hurt more than anything.

“Because you are my son.””

Marcus looked away.

“No.””

The word came quickly.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“I can’t.””

Amara nodded.

“I know.””

Her voice was gentle.

“You don’t have to accept me today.””

Marcus stared.

“I don’t even know you.””

“I know.””

She looked at him.

“But I have known you every day of my life.””

A tear fell from her cheek.

“I knew the first tooth you lost.””

Marcus froze.

“I knew you hated thunderstorms when you were little.””

His expression changed slightly.

“I knew you used to hide under blankets and pretend you weren’t scared.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

Because those memories were real.

Those were things only someone close to him would know.

Amara continued.

“I knew you loved pancakes but only if they were shaped like circles.””

A small broken smile appeared on Marcus’s face.

A memory.

A real memory.

Something from childhood.

“How?””

His voice was softer.

Amara looked at Evelyn.

“Because she sent me pictures.””

Everyone turned.

Evelyn looked down.

Marcus’s face changed.

“She did?””

Amara nodded.

“For years.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“Why?””

Evelyn struggled to answer.

“Because I knew you deserved to know her.””

Marcus stared.

“But you never told me.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

“I was selfish.””

The word surprised everyone.

Evelyn Carter admitting selfishness felt impossible.

“I was afraid that if you knew where you came from, you would stop needing me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And you thought lying was better?””

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“No.””

She whispered.

“I knew it wasn’t.””

The room became quiet.

I watched Marcus standing between two women.

Two mothers.

Two different kinds of love.

One who gave birth to him.

One who raised him.

And both had broken him in different ways.

Danielle stepped forward.

“There is something else.””

Marcus looked exhausted.

“Of course there is.””

She opened the folder.

“Your father wanted this revealed only after Amara returned.””

Marcus frowned.

“Returned?””

Amara looked down.

She looked afraid.

“Marcus…”

He looked at her.

“What?””

She took a slow breath.

“When I disappeared from your life, it wasn’t because I left.””

The room went silent.

Marcus waited.

“I was forced away.””

His eyes narrowed.

“By who?””

Nobody answered.

But he already knew.

His gaze moved toward Evelyn.

“No.””

Evelyn whispered.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

Evelyn looked away.

That was enough.

Marcus stepped back.

“You took me from my mother.””

Evelyn began crying.

“I saved you.””

“From what?””

Silence.

Amara looked at Evelyn.

Then at Marcus.

“You need to know the whole story.””

Marcus’s voice was empty.

“Then tell me.””

Amara took a breath.

“The night I lost you…”

She looked at Evelyn.

“She made me choose.””

Marcus stared.

“Choose what?””

Amara’s eyes filled.

“Your life…”

She paused.

“Or mine.””

The ballroom went completely still.

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“What did you do?””

Evelyn opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, a sound came from the back of the room.

A phone notification.

Everyone turned.

Danielle looked at her screen.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”” Marcus asked.

She looked up.

“There’s a new message.””

“From who?””

May you like

Danielle’s voice dropped.

“From your father.””
