Chapter 3: The Name Hidden In The Truth

Marcus stared at the first page like it was written in another language.

The ballroom remained frozen.

Nobody touched their champagne.

Nobody took pictures anymore.

The wedding that was supposed to begin with vows had become a courtroom without a judge.

I stood beside Marcus, holding onto his arm.

“Tell me what it says,” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

That scared me more than anything.

Marcus was never speechless.

He was the person who always knew what to say. The person who could calm me when I was overwhelmed. The person who could walk into any room and make people feel safe.

But now he looked like a child who had just discovered the ground beneath him was not real.

Evelyn took another step forward.

“Marcus.””

He looked up.

“Don’t call me that like everything is normal.””

Her face tightened.

“I am your mother.””

Marcus looked at the paper again.

“Are you?””

The question destroyed the room.

A few guests covered their mouths.

I watched Evelyn’s eyes fill with something I had never seen from her.

Panic.

Not anger.

Not control.

Panic.

Danielle carefully closed her hands around her folder.

“Marcus, your father spent years trying to find the right time to tell you.””

“My father knew?”” Marcus asked.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Danielle looked down.

“Because he was afraid of what would happen if Evelyn found out he was ready to reveal the truth.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“This is a lie.””

Nobody responded.

She pointed at Danielle.

“She is trying to destroy my family.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You destroyed my wedding.””

The words were quiet.

But they hurt.

Evelyn looked toward me.

“This girl came into your life and everything changed.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

There it was.

The thing she had always believed.

That I had taken something from her.

Marcus stepped closer to me.

“She didn’t change me.””

He looked at his mother.

“You did.””

The attorney reached toward the folder.

“There is another document.””

Marcus froze.

“Another?””

Danielle nodded.

“Your father left instructions that you should only see it after confirming the first page.””

Evelyn immediately shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

She realized too late that she had reacted.

Too quickly.

Too strongly.

And everyone noticed.

“You knew,” Marcus said.

Evelyn said nothing.

“You knew there was something here.””

Her silence answered him.

My heart pounded.

For years, I thought Evelyn disliked me because she wanted control.

Now I wondered if there had always been something bigger.

Something hidden.

Something she was willing to destroy a wedding to protect.

Marcus slowly turned the page.

The paper moved in his hands.

I saw his eyes scan the words.

His breathing changed.

“Marcus?”” I asked.

He looked at Danielle.

“What does this mean?””

The attorney opened her mouth.

But Evelyn interrupted.

“Because you don’t know the whole story.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Then tell me.””

She didn’t.

The silence was louder than any confession.

Marcus looked down again.

Then he saw the name printed near the bottom of the page.

A name.

A name he had never heard before.

His hand lowered.

“Nia…”

I grabbed his arm.

“What?””

He looked at me.

His eyes were full of questions.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

Questions.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“Mom…”

The way he said it sounded different.

Like he wasn’t speaking to his mother anymore.

Like he was speaking to a stranger.

The severed piece of my braid still rested near Evelyn’s feet.

She looked down at it.

Then back at Marcus.

And for the first time, the woman who had controlled every room she entered had nothing left to control.

Marcus opened his mouth.

“Who is she?””

Evelyn’s face went completely still.

And before anyone could hear the answer…

The lights above the ballroom flickered.

Marcus looked back at the document.

Because one final line was visible.

May you like

The line that changed everything.

“EVELYN CARTER — NOT MARCUS CARTER’S BIOLOGICAL MOTHER.””
