Chapter 2: The Folder That Changed Everything

Marcus did not open the folder immediately.

That was the part I remember most.

Everyone expected him to tear it open. Everyone expected anger, shouting, something dramatic.

But Marcus just stood there.

Still.

Like his entire body was trying to understand what his eyes had already seen.

The attorney remained in front of him, holding the gray folder steady.

Her name was Danielle Brooks.

I knew because I had seen her business card earlier when she introduced herself quietly to Marcus before the ceremony.

But I had no idea why Marcus’s father would send a lawyer to our wedding.

Especially not with a warning.

Especially not about Evelyn.

Marcus looked over his shoulder at me.

My braid was still damaged. My makeup was streaked from crying. My wedding dress was covered with tiny pieces of hair that had fallen when Evelyn cut it.

I felt embarrassed.

Broken.

But when Marcus looked at me, I didn’t see disappointment.

I saw confusion.

And fear.

“Marcus,” Evelyn said.

Her voice was different now.

Softer.

Careful.

“Put that folder down.””

Nobody moved.

Marcus looked at her.

“Why?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Because whatever is inside that folder doesn’t belong here.””

Danielle stepped closer.

“Actually, Mr. Carter’s instructions were very clear.””

She looked directly at Marcus.

“He wanted you to receive this today.””

“Why today?”” Marcus asked.

The attorney hesitated.

“Because he believed your mother would eventually try to stop this marriage.””

The room erupted with whispers.

I felt Marcus’s hand tighten around mine.

“My father knew?”” he asked.

Danielle nodded.

“He knew Evelyn would do everything possible to prevent you from building a life outside her control.””

Evelyn’s expression changed instantly.

“That is enough.””

Her voice cut through the room.

She stepped forward.

“You walk into my son’s wedding with accusations and paperwork, and you expect everyone to believe you?””

Danielle didn’t move.

“I’m not asking anyone to believe me.””

She pointed toward the folder.

“I’m asking Marcus to read what his father left behind.””

Marcus stared at his mother.

“Mom.””

Evelyn’s eyes softened.

For a moment, she looked less like the powerful woman who had just cut my braid.

She looked desperate.

“Marcus, I raised you.””

The words landed heavily.

“I protected you. I sacrificed everything for you.””

Marcus looked away.

“And I’m grateful.””

“Then trust me.””

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus opened the folder.

The paper inside made a soft sound.

A sound that somehow felt louder than all the whispers.

His eyes moved across the page.

Once.

Twice.

Then his face changed.

I stepped closer.

“Marcus?””

He didn’t answer.

“Baby, what is it?””

His fingers shook slightly.

Danielle looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

Evelyn suddenly moved forward.

“Marcus, give me that.””

He pulled the document away.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

But everyone heard it.

Evelyn stopped.

For the first time in my life, I saw someone tell her no.

Marcus looked back at the page.

“What does this mean?””

Nobody answered.

The attorney lowered her voice.

“It means the person you believed was your mother may not be the person your father said she was.””

My breath caught.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Danielle…”

The attorney looked at her.

“You knew this day would come.””

Marcus looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

The room felt smaller.

The flowers.

The lights.

The guests.

Everything disappeared.

There was only Marcus and the truth sitting in his hands.

Then his eyes stopped on one line.

His face turned pale.

I saw the exact moment his entire world cracked.

Because whatever was written there was not about our wedding.

It was about his life.

And before he could speak…

May you like

Evelyn whispered:

“Marcus, please don’t read the next page.””
