Chapter 10: The Truth Vanessa Never Told

Marcus stared at Vanessa.

The rain continued falling around them, but neither of them moved.

The music box sat in his hand, still playing Elena’s voice over and over in his mind.

The person you married.

Those words had not been a question.

They had been a warning.

Vanessa slowly shook her head.

“Marcus…”

He stepped back.

“Don’t.””

Her face tightened.

“You think I’m the person she meant.””

“You were the only person standing between us.””

“That doesn’t mean—”

“You knew she was alive.””

Vanessa stopped.

“You knew Daniel.””

Another pause.

“You knew about the fire.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And you still let me believe my wife was dead.””

The accusation landed harder than any scream.

Vanessa looked down.

“I deserve that.””

Marcus did not expect those words.

He expected denial.

Anger.

Excuses.

Not acceptance.

“I want the truth.””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

The little girl stood beside the gate, holding onto the iron bars.

Then Vanessa looked back at Marcus.

“You need to hear everything.””

Marcus waited.

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Daniel was obsessed with control. He believed people were pieces on a board. He thought your company, your money, your reputation… everything you built belonged to him because he helped you get started.””

Marcus remembered the early years.

The investor meetings.

The people who suddenly disappeared.

The deals that somehow always worked out.

“He wanted to own my life.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“And Elena?””

“He hated that she could reach you.””

Marcus looked away.

“She was my wife.””

“I know.””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“And that’s why he wanted her gone.””

The words were painful.

But Marcus needed them.

“What happened the night of the fire?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I found out Daniel had hired someone.””

Marcus looked at her.

“To start the fire?””

She nodded.

“I tried to stop him.””

“Why didn’t you call the police?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because he had something on me.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

She looked at him.

“Me.””

The answer confused him.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“When Daniel came to me, he told me if I exposed him, he would release information that would destroy me.””

Marcus waited.

“What information?””

Vanessa looked toward the mansion.

“The truth about my father.””

Silence.

Marcus frowned.

“Your father?””

Vanessa nodded.

“My father was involved with Daniel before he died. There were things he did that I spent my entire life trying to escape.””

Marcus watched her carefully.

“And Daniel knew.””

“Yes.””

“So you were afraid.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“But you let Elena disappear.””

Vanessa’s tears fell.

“I thought I could fix it.””

He laughed softly.

Painfully.

“Everyone says that.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I followed Daniel that night.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

“I saw him go to the house.””

The rain seemed louder.

“I saw smoke.””

Vanessa’s voice trembled.

“I ran inside.””

Marcus stared.

“You went into the fire?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I found Elena.””

Marcus felt his chest tighten.

“She was alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you bring her out?””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“I tried.””

A pause.

“But Daniel found us.””

Marcus stared.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“He made a choice.””

“What choice?””

“He saved me.””

Marcus did not understand.

“Why?””

“Because he needed me.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“He told me Elena had to disappear. But he also knew killing me would create more questions.””

Marcus felt sick.

“So he let both of you live.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He forced Elena to run.””

Marcus looked toward the road.

“And you?””

“I stayed.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Because Lily was still inside.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found her.””

Marcus’s heart stopped.

“You found Lily?””

“She was unconscious. Smoke inhalation.””

He closed his eyes.

A memory came back.

The hospital.

The doctors.

The explanation that Lily had been found by firefighters.

But now…

“No.””

Vanessa whispered:

“I carried her out.””

Marcus looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one that could make it okay.

“I was afraid you would hate me.””

Marcus looked at her.

“I do.””

The words hurt both of them.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“I know.””

A phone buzzed.

Marcus looked down.

Not Vanessa’s.

His own.

Unknown number.

A message appeared.

*If you want Elena back, come alone.*

Then another message arrived.

A picture.

Elena.

Sitting in a dark room.

Alive.

Terrified.

Marcus’s hands shook.

Vanessa saw the image.

“No.””

Marcus looked at her.

“You know where this is.””

She stared at the photo.

Then whispered:

“Yes.””

“Where?””

May you like

Vanessa looked toward the old road beyond the mansion.

“The place where the fire started.””
