Chapter 6: The Room Nobody Opened
The mansion had never been completely dark.
Not once.
Marcus had lived there for eight years, and even during storms, emergency lights always kept the halls glowing.
But now the entire house disappeared into darkness.
Vanessa looked toward the front door.
“No.””
Marcus noticed immediately.
She was not surprised.
She was afraid.
“What is it?””
Vanessa did not answer.
Marcus stepped toward the porch.
“What is in this house?””
Vanessa blocked his path.
“Marcus.””
He stopped.
“Move.””
Her eyes filled with panic.
“You don’t want to go upstairs.””
That sentence made him stop more than anything else could have.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked away.
Because she knew she could no longer hide it.
“There is a room.””
Marcus stared.
“A room?””
“One Daniel used.””
The rain poured harder.
Elena gripped the gate.
“Marcus, don’t go in there.””
He looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because that room has the answers.””
“And?””
Elena looked toward Vanessa.
“It also has the things he wanted hidden.””
Marcus walked toward the front door.
Vanessa followed.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
He turned.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“That’s what everyone keeps telling me.””
He pointed toward Lily.
“Don’t ask.””
He pointed toward Elena.
“Don’t believe.””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Don’t go.””
A pause.
“I’m done listening.””
The door opened.
The mansion interior was dark.
Cold air moved through the entrance.
Lily stayed outside with Elena while Marcus stepped inside.
He did not want his daughter seeing whatever waited in that house.
The hallway smelled different.
Like old wood.
Like dust.
Like something untouched.
Vanessa walked behind him.
“Marcus.””
He ignored her.
At the end of the hallway was a staircase.
Above it, a single door.
Closed.
Marcus looked up.
“That room?””
Vanessa nodded.
He climbed.
Each step sounded louder than it should.
When he reached the door, he noticed something carved into the wood.
A small symbol.
A symbol he had seen before.
On the back of the music box.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You knew.””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
His hand touched the doorknob.
It was unlocked.
Inside was a small room.
Not an office.
Not a bedroom.
Something else.
The walls were covered with photographs.
Documents.
Newspaper clippings.
Pictures of Marcus.
Elena.
Lily.
Marcus stopped.
His stomach turned.
This was not a hiding place.
It was a collection.
A record.
A plan.
On the center table sat a folder.
His name was written on it.
Marcus picked it up.
Inside were pages.
Dates.
Notes.
Observations.
His life reduced to sentences written by someone watching him.
“He changed after Lily was born.””
“He became harder to control.””
“Elena is the obstacle.””
Marcus stopped reading.
Control.
The word burned.
Vanessa stood behind him.
“I wanted to destroy this room.””
Marcus turned.
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled.
“Because Daniel always came back.””
Marcus looked at the papers again.
Then he saw something near the bottom.
A recent photograph.
Not old.
Not from before the fire.
From yesterday.
His blood ran cold.
The picture showed Elena outside the city.
Alive.
Watching the Whitmore mansion.
But on the back of the photo was a message.
Marcus turned it over.
Three words.
He read them silently.
Then looked at Vanessa.
“Who took this?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
She knew.
Marcus held up the photo.
“Who has been watching Elena?””
Before Vanessa could answer, Lily’s scream came from downstairs.
Marcus ran.
He reached the front door.
And froze.
Because outside the gate, standing in the rain…
Was a man.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Daniel Cross.
And he was looking directly at Lily.
Then he said:
May you like
“Hello, little girl.””
“I’ve been waiting for you.””
