Chapter 12: The Memory Lily Buried
Marcus could not look away from Vanessa.
The ruined house seemed to disappear around him.
There was only one question.
One answer.
One person who had avoided it for years.
“Vanessa.””
She started crying.
“Marcus…”
“Who did Lily see?””
Vanessa looked at Elena.
Then at Daniel.
Then finally at Marcus.
“I don’t know.””
The words were weak.
Too weak.
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“You know.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I was trying to protect her.””
“Protect who?””
“Everyone.””
Marcus laughed.
“Everyone except me.””
The sound hurt.
Vanessa lowered her hands.
“I was there.””
The room went silent.
Elena stared.
Marcus felt his heartbeat slow.
“You were there.””
Vanessa nodded.
“The night of the fire.””
Daniel watched silently.
Marcus looked at her.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“I didn’t start it.””
A pause.
“But I was there when it happened.””
Marcus waited.
Vanessa looked toward the broken window.
“I followed Daniel because I knew he was planning something.””
“And?””
“I found him arguing with Elena.””
Elena nodded slowly.
“I remember.””
Vanessa looked at her.
“You told him you would expose everything.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“You knew?””
Elena nodded.
“I found his financial records.””
Vanessa continued.
“Daniel became angry.””
She closed her eyes.
“He knocked over the lantern.””
Marcus felt cold.
“The fire started.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Everyone thinks fires begin with one big moment.””
She swallowed.
“But sometimes it starts with one second.””
Marcus looked at Elena.
“What happened next?””
Vanessa’s voice became smaller.
“Daniel left.””
Marcus frowned.
“He left you there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought I would choose him.””
A bitter smile appeared.
“He was wrong.””
The silence returned.
Then Marcus asked:
“Where was Lily?””
Vanessa looked at him.
The pain in her face answered before her words did.
“She was outside the room.””
Marcus froze.
“She heard everything.””
Elena whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Vanessa nodded.
“She saw Daniel.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“And me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“She saw you come home.””
Marcus opened his eyes.
“What?””
“You ran inside.””
A memory flashed.
The smoke.
The flames.
The chaos.
The moment he thought he lost everything.
“She saw me?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She saw you trying to save us.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then why did she stop talking?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because after the fire…”
She hesitated.
“Daniel came back.””
Marcus’s expression changed.
“What?””
“He found Lily.””
Elena stepped forward.
“No.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told her if she ever spoke about that night, he would hurt her father.””
Marcus felt like he couldn’t breathe.
Lily had carried that fear alone.
For two years.
Because she was protecting him.
His daughter.
His little girl.
A sound came from the hallway.
A small voice.
“Daddy?””
Everyone turned.
Lily stood there.
Marcus froze.
“How did you get here?””
She walked slowly toward him.
Her eyes were full of tears.
“I remembered.””
Marcus dropped to his knees.
“Baby…”
Lily hugged him.
Then whispered:
“I saw him.””
Marcus held her tighter.
“Who?””
She looked past him.
At Daniel.
“He was holding the match.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
For the first time…
He looked afraid.
May you like
Because Lily remembered.
And this time, she could speak.
