Chapter 14: The Last Lie
The police arrived within minutes.
But Daniel Cross was already gone.
Somehow, in the chaos of the storm, he disappeared through the back of the abandoned property.
Marcus wanted to chase him.
Every part of him wanted to.
But Lily was holding his hand.
And for the first time in years…
She was not silent.
So he stayed.
Because his daughter mattered more than revenge.
The investigators searched the old house.
They found the hidden files.
The documents.
The recordings.
The evidence Daniel had spent years trying to bury.
But one question remained.
Why had Vanessa hidden the truth?
Marcus sat on the porch of the mansion hours later.
The rain had stopped.
The sky was beginning to clear.
Lily slept inside with Elena beside her.
Marcus sat alone.
Vanessa approached slowly.
“I know you don’t want to see me.””
Marcus looked ahead.
“You’re right.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
A long silence passed.
Then Marcus spoke.
“Why?””
Vanessa sat beside him.
“Because I was scared.””
“That’s not enough.””
“I know.””
He looked at her.
“Do you know what hurts the most?””
Vanessa waited.
“It’s not that Elena survived.””
A pause.
“It’s not even that Daniel lied.””
His voice broke.
“It’s that every person I loved decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
Vanessa looked down.
“You’re right.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No excuses?””
“No.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I spent years thinking silence was protection.””
A pause.
“But silence only protects the person keeping the secret.””
Marcus looked away.
Vanessa continued.
“The recording Daniel played was real.””
Marcus looked back.
“What?””
“It was real.””
His expression changed.
“Then Elena was wrong.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at him.
“But it wasn’t what Daniel wanted you to believe.””
“Explain.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“After the fire, when you were in the hospital, you were barely conscious.””
Marcus remembered.
“I said things.””
“Yes.””
“What things?””
Vanessa looked at the mansion.
“You blamed yourself.””
Marcus went quiet.
“You thought you failed Elena.””
His eyes lowered.
“You said you wanted to disappear.””
Marcus felt a chill.
“I don’t remember.””
“I know.””
Vanessa continued.
“You were broken.””
A pause.
“I was afraid you would make a decision you couldn’t undo.””
Marcus looked at her.
“So I asked you for help?””
“Yes.””
“And that recording?””
“You told me to keep you away from anything connected to Daniel.””
Marcus stared.
Not because it was shocking.
Because it was familiar.
He could imagine himself saying that.
Vanessa looked at him.
“I should have told you everything when you recovered.””
“But you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
She answered honestly.
“Because by then, you had Lily.””
Marcus looked toward the window.
“And Elena?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I thought Elena was gone.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
The pain was complicated.
Nobody was completely innocent.
Nobody was completely guilty.
Except Daniel.
A sound came from inside.
Lily.
Marcus stood immediately.
She appeared at the doorway holding the gold music box.
“Daddy.””
He smiled.
“Yes?””
She walked toward him.
“I remembered something else.””
Marcus knelt.
“What?””
Lily held up the music box.
“Mommy hid something.””
Elena appeared behind her.
Her face changed.
“Lily.””
The little girl looked at her mother.
“It’s okay.””
She opened the music box.
But this time, she pressed a different spot.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny key.
Marcus stared.
“A key?””
Elena whispered:
“I didn’t know that was there.””
Lily looked at him.
“It opens the door.””
Marcus frowned.
“What door?””
Lily pointed toward the mansion.
“The room upstairs.””
Marcus felt cold.
The room Daniel had used.
The room they had already searched.
But Lily shook her head.
“Not that room.””
She looked toward the hallway.
“The other one.””
Everyone went silent.
Because Marcus had lived in that mansion for eight years.
And he knew every room.
Or he thought he did.
Elena took the key.
Her hands trembled.
“There was another room.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa went pale.
“You knew?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
Marcus stared.
“Another secret?””
Vanessa looked toward the mansion.
“No.””
May you like
A pause.
“The final one.””
