Chapter 3: The Secret Inside The Music Box

Vanessa did not answer the phone.

She stared at the screen as if the name appearing there could destroy her.

Marcus noticed.

“Who is calling?””

Vanessa locked the phone.

“No one.””

Marcus gave a bitter laugh.

“No one?””

The rainwater ran down his face, but he barely noticed.

“Your hands are shaking.””

Vanessa looked at them.

For the first time, she seemed unaware of her own fear.

Elena watched her carefully.

“She knows.””

Marcus turned.

“Knows what?””

Elena looked down at Lily.

The little girl was still holding onto the gate.

“She knows why I disappeared.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

Elena hesitated.

Her eyes moved toward the mansion.

Toward the place where she had once lived.

Toward the place where everything changed.

“I can’t.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You came back after two years, walked into my yard, scared my wife, and now you’re telling me you can’t explain?””

Elena closed her eyes.

“I came back because Lily needed to know I didn’t abandon her.””

Lily’s expression changed.

A small tear rolled down her cheek.

Marcus immediately reached toward her.

“Oh, sweetheart…”

But Lily turned toward Elena.

“She waited.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Lily looked at the music box.

“She waited for me.””

Elena began crying.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

Elena slowly opened the music box.

The tiny golden lid lifted.

The familiar melody began playing.

A melody Marcus had heard hundreds of times.

But then he noticed something.

A small piece on the bottom of the box had shifted.

Elena pressed a hidden button.

A tiny compartment opened.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

Marcus stared.

“What is that?””

Elena removed it carefully.

“I kept it because I knew someday I would need proof.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“No, Elena.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“You know what’s inside?””

Vanessa did not answer.

That was enough.

Marcus took the paper from Elena.

His hands shook as he unfolded it.

The writing was old.

But the signature at the bottom was clear.

Elena’s.

And beneath it was another name.

Vanessa.

Marcus looked up.

“What is this?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

Not sadness.

Regret.

“Marcus…”

“No.””

He held up the paper.

“You knew.””

The entire yard became silent.

Elena lowered her head.

“I tried to tell you.””

Marcus looked at her.

“When?””

“Before the fire.””

His expression changed.

Before the fire.

The words felt like a door opening.

A door he had spent years refusing to touch.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Marcus, you need to understand—”

“No.””

His voice was louder now.

“You don’t get to explain until I know one thing.””

He looked at Elena.

“Why did you come back tonight?””

Elena stared at him.

Because she knew the answer would change everything.

“I came back because someone is trying to finish what they started.””

Marcus felt a cold wave move through him.

“What started?””

Elena looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa looked away.

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

But clearly.

“The night Mommy disappeared…”

Everyone turned.

Lily squeezed the gate.

“She wasn’t alone.””

Marcus felt his heart stop.

Elena looked at her daughter in shock.

“Lily…”

The little girl continued.

“She heard someone crying.””

Marcus knelt beside her.

“Who, Lily?””

Lily looked toward the mansion.

Toward Vanessa.

And whispered:

“Her.””

Vanessa stepped backward.

The porch light flickered above her.

Marcus slowly turned.

“Vanessa?””

She did not answer.

Elena held the music box tightly.

Then the phone in Vanessa’s hand rang again.

This time, the screen was visible.

Marcus saw the name.

May you like

And his entire world changed.

Because the caller was someone who was supposed to be dead.
