Chapter 13: The Girl Who Remembered Everything

For two years, Marcus had wondered what had stolen his daughter’s voice.

Doctors had given him explanations.

Trauma.

Fear.

Shock.

But nobody had ever told him the truth.

Lily had not lost her voice.

She had buried it.

Because she was protecting him.

Marcus held her tightly as the ruined house stood around them.

The broken walls.

The burned wood.

The memories.

Everything that had haunted his family for years had finally been dragged into the light.

Daniel stared at Lily.

The confidence was gone.

The calm expression had disappeared.

For the first time, Marcus saw what he had been hiding all along.

Fear.

“You’re lying,” Daniel said.

Lily held onto her father.

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

But she spoke.

“You dropped the match.””

Daniel took a step back.

“No.””

“You were angry.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“You told Mommy she was going to ruin everything.””

Elena covered her mouth.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You said that?””

Daniel’s face tightened.

The room became painfully quiet.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“It’s over, Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“You.””

The anger returned.

“You were always weak.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“I was afraid.””

Daniel laughed.

“You still are.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not anymore.””

Marcus looked at her.

For the first time, he saw the woman beneath the secrets.

Not innocent.

Not perfect.

But someone who had finally decided to stop running.

Daniel looked around the room.

“You think this changes anything?””

Marcus stood.

“Yes.””

Daniel smiled.

“No, Marcus. It doesn’t.””

He pointed toward Lily.

“She remembers one moment.””

A pause.

“But she doesn’t remember everything.””

Marcus moved closer.

“What else is there?””

Daniel’s smile returned.

That scared Marcus more.

“There are things Elena never told you.””

Elena looked at him.

“Stop.””

Daniel ignored her.

“Ask her about the documents.””

Marcus turned.

“What documents?””

Elena’s face changed.

Marcus felt the disappointment before he even knew the answer.

“Elena?””

She looked down.

“I wanted to tell you.””

His jaw tightened.

“When?””

She had no answer.

Daniel laughed.

“Everyone lies to you, Marcus.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you built your entire life believing you were the hero.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“But you weren’t.””

Marcus felt anger rise.

“You burned my house.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“You think Elena was innocent because she was your wife.””

Elena looked at him.

“Don’t.””

Daniel continued.

“She was investigating me.””

Marcus looked at Elena.

“Yes.””

The answer shocked him.

Elena stepped forward.

“I was.””

“Why?””

“Because I found financial records.””

Marcus waited.

“And?””

Elena looked at him.

“And they connected Daniel to people inside your company.””

Marcus frowned.

“My company?””

She nodded.

“Someone was stealing from you.””

Daniel laughed.

“See?””

He looked at Marcus.

“She never told you because she was protecting herself.””

Elena’s expression hardened.

“I was protecting you.””

Marcus looked between them.

The truth had become impossible to separate from the lies.

Then Daniel moved.

Fast.

He reached inside his jacket.

Marcus reacted instantly.

He pushed Lily behind him.

But Daniel did not pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a phone.

He pressed the screen.

A recording started playing.

Marcus heard his own voice.

From years ago.

A conversation he didn’t remember.

“You’re going too far.””

His own voice.

Talking to someone.

Talking about Daniel.

Marcus froze.

Daniel watched his reaction.

“You forgot.””

The recording continued.

“I trusted you.””

Marcus looked confused.

The voice responded.

A woman’s voice.

Vanessa.

“No one can know.””

Marcus felt the world shift.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Daniel smiled.

“Now tell them the truth.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“What was that?””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“Marcus…”

“What was that?””

She closed her eyes.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Vanessa whispered:

“From yourself.””

Marcus stared.

The answer made no sense.

Then Elena noticed something.

The phone.

The recording.

The way Daniel was holding it.

She stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

He looked at her.

“That recording is edited.””

Daniel’s smile disappeared slightly.

Elena continued.

“He does this.””

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“He cuts pieces out.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

Elena looked at Marcus.

“The full conversation is still somewhere.””

Daniel stepped back.

Because she was right.

Marcus saw it.

The tiny reaction.

The fear.

He turned toward Daniel.

“Where is the original?””

Daniel said nothing.

Marcus moved closer.

“Where is it?””

Then Daniel smiled.

“Too late.””

A siren sounded in the distance.

Daniel looked toward the window.

Marcus froze.

“What did you do?””

Daniel smiled.

“I made sure someone else found the evidence first.””

Outside, police lights appeared through the trees.

But Daniel was not looking at them.

He was looking at Lily.

May you like

And whispering:

“She remembers too much.””
