Chapter 2: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
Vanessa Whitmore stepped onto the porch holding a glass of wine she never drank.
She wore an elegant black dress, her hair perfectly styled, her expression calm.
Too calm.
Marcus had always admired that about his wife.
Vanessa never panicked.
Vanessa always knew what to say.
Vanessa always looked like she belonged anywhere.
But now, standing in the rain-lit entrance of their mansion, she looked like someone who had just seen a ghost.
Elena stopped moving.
The gold music box slipped slightly in her hand.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Lily looked up at Vanessa.
Then back at Elena.
Then at her father.
She did not understand the secrets between them.
But she understood fear.
And everyone was afraid.
Marcus slowly turned toward his wife.
“Vanessa?””
She did not answer.
The confident woman who had walked into boardrooms and charity events without hesitation was suddenly frozen.
Elena whispered:
“She’s here…”
Marcus looked back at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa finally found her voice.
“Marcus, bring Lily inside.””
The command was quiet.
But it was not a request.
Marcus noticed.
And Elena noticed too.
Elena stepped backward.
“No.””
Marcus frowned.
“Elena?””
“She cannot have her.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Just for a second.
A tiny crack in the perfect mask.
“What did you say?”” Vanessa asked.
Elena gripped the music box.
“You know exactly what I said.””
Marcus looked between them.
He felt like he was standing in the middle of a story everyone knew except him.
“Someone explain this.””
Nobody moved.
The rain continued falling.
Lily held onto the gate.
Marcus crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, come here.””
But Lily shook her head.
Her fingers stayed wrapped around the iron bars.
She looked at Elena.
Then whispered:
“Mommy was scared.””
Marcus felt his heart break.
“What?””
Lily looked at him.
“She cried.””
Elena covered her face.
Marcus stared at his daughter.
For two years, she had barely spoken.
And now she was revealing memories he never knew she had.
Vanessa stepped down from the porch.
“Lily is confused.””
Elena immediately looked up.
“No.””
Her voice was stronger now.
“She remembers.””
Vanessa stopped.
Marcus noticed the reaction.
Not anger.
Not disbelief.
Fear.
“You know she remembers,” Elena said.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“You should not have come here.””
The words hung in the air.
Marcus felt his stomach drop.
Because Vanessa did not say:
“You are lying.””
She did not say:
“I do not know you.””
She said:
“You should not have come here.””
Marcus stood.
“Vanessa.””
She looked at him.
“What?””
He stared at his wife.
“The way you said that…”
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus walked closer.
“Do you know Elena?””
Silence.
That silence answered more than words.
Elena pressed the music box against her chest.
“I spent two years trying to get back to my daughter.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Where were you?””
Elena looked down.
“I was hiding.””
“From who?””
Her eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Marcus followed the look.
“No.””
The word escaped him before he could stop it.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
But he raised his hand.
“Don’t.””
His voice was shaking.
“Not until someone tells me why my dead wife is standing outside my gate.””
A flash of lightning lit the yard.
For one second, Marcus saw everyone clearly.
Lily.
The daughter he had protected.
Elena.
The woman he buried.
Vanessa.
The woman beside him.
Three people connected by a truth he could not see.
Then Elena spoke softly.
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
“She didn’t just know about the fire.””
His heartbeat quickened.
“She was there.””
Vanessa’s face went completely pale.
Marcus stared.
“What?””
Elena looked at Vanessa.
“You remember that night.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Marcus stepped backward.
The mansion suddenly felt unfamiliar.
Like it belonged to strangers.
Then Lily reached through the gate and touched Elena’s hand.
“Mommy…”
Elena looked at her daughter.
“I’m sorry.””
“For what?”” Marcus asked.
Elena looked at him with tears in her eyes.
“For leaving you.””
A pause.
“And for believing she would stop after taking everything else.””
Marcus felt the blood leave his face.
Before he could ask another question, Vanessa’s phone began ringing.
She looked at the screen.

And for the first time that night…
She looked truly terrified.
