Chapter 11: The House That Burned Twice
The abandoned house stood at the edge of the property line.
Marcus had not seen it in years.
He had convinced himself it was gone.
Destroyed.
Forgotten.
But the old Whitmore house remained.
A blackened skeleton hidden behind trees.
A place where memories refused to die.
Marcus stepped out of the car.
Vanessa followed.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
He looked at her.
“You said that before.””
“I mean it.””
Marcus looked at the ruined house.
“So did everyone who lied to me.””
Vanessa had no response.
They walked toward the entrance.
The door was already open.
Waiting.
Marcus felt a coldness that had nothing to do with the rain.
Inside, the smell of ash still lingered.
Years later.
Still there.
“How?””
Vanessa looked around.
“Some things never leave.””
Marcus stepped over broken wood.
Then he heard something.
A voice.
“Marcus.””
He froze.
“Elena?””
The voice came from upstairs.
He ran.
“Marcus, wait!””
But he was already moving.
He reached the second floor.
A room at the end of the hallway.
The door opened slowly.
Inside, Elena sat in a chair.
Her hands were tied.
But she was alive.
Marcus rushed toward her.
“Elena.””
She looked up.
Relief crossed her face.
“You came.””
He untied her.
“Are you hurt?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Where is Daniel?””
Her expression changed.
“He’s close.””
Marcus helped her stand.
“Tell me everything.””
Elena looked at Vanessa.
Then back at Marcus.
“I was wrong.””
He frowned.
“About what?””
“I thought Daniel was the only person hiding things.””
A pause.
“But I was wrong.””
Marcus felt exhausted.
“Please don’t do this again.””
Elena looked at him.
“I found out why he wanted Lily.””
Marcus froze.
“Why?””
Elena reached into her coat.
She pulled out a document.
“He wasn’t trying to destroy your family.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Then what was he trying to do?””
Elena handed him the paper.
Marcus read.
And his expression changed.
The document was a custody agreement.
A legal transfer.
But the names on it…
Made no sense.
Daniel Cross.
And Lily Whitmore.
“No.””
Elena nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked at her.
“This is impossible.””
“He planned to take her.””
Marcus felt anger rising.
“He wanted my daughter?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Elena looked at Vanessa.
“Because Daniel believed Lily was the only thing connecting you to the past.””
Marcus looked down.
His daughter.
His little girl.
The person he had protected every day.
Then a slow clap echoed from the hallway.
Everyone turned.
Daniel stood there.
Smiling.
“You finally understand.””
Marcus stepped in front of Elena.
“You tried to take my daughter.””
Daniel walked closer.
“I tried to save her.””
Marcus almost laughed.
“Save her?””
Daniel nodded.
“From all of you.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Daniel, stop.””
He looked at her.
“You still defend them?””
Marcus stared.
“What is he talking about?””
Daniel smiled.
“Ask Vanessa why Lily was really in that house.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus turned.
“Vanessa?””
She looked away.
“No.””
Daniel laughed.
“She never told you.””
Marcus felt his patience disappear.
“Tell me.””
Vanessa’s voice was barely audible.
“Lily wasn’t supposed to be there.””
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Vanessa cried.
“She came back early that night.””
Elena looked shocked.
“I thought she was with you.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel answered.
“Your daughter saw something.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at Lily’s memory.
The words.
The fear.
The crying.
“What did she see?””
Daniel smiled.
“She saw who started the fire.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Because suddenly he understood.
The reason Lily stopped speaking.
The reason she was afraid.
The reason she looked at Vanessa with fear.
Marcus whispered:
“Who did she see?””
May you like
Daniel’s smile faded.
“Ask your wife.””
