Chapter 12 - LUCY STOPPED SAYING “THE RIGHT STORY”For months, Lucy would ask:

“Which story do I say?”
About everything.
What happened at preschool?
“Which story?”
Who spilled the milk?
“Which story?”
What do you want for dinner?
“Which answer?”
Melissa had taught her that truth depended on what adults needed.
So Lucy’s new therapist worked on something simple.
“There is no right story.”
Then:
“Tell what you remember.”
If she didn’t remember?
Say that.
If she wasn’t sure?
Say that.
If she didn’t want to answer?
Say that too.
It took months.
One day, I asked:
“Did you brush your teeth?”
Lucy said:
“No.”
Then immediately covered her mouth.
I smiled.
“Thank you for telling me.”
She stared.
“You’re not mad?”
“I’m still making you brush them.”
She groaned.
That was progress.
