Chapter 14 - THE LAUNDRY ROOMLucy avoided the laundry room for almost two years.

She would stop at the doorway.
Call for me.
Ask Rosa to get things.
We never forced it.
Then one Saturday, the washing machine flooded.
Soap everywhere.
I started swearing.
Lucy appeared.
“What happened?”
“The washing machine declared war.”
She laughed.
Then rolled up her pajama pants.
Walked into the laundry room.
Barefoot.
She grabbed towels.
Helped me mop.
Only later did I realize where she was standing.
The same small room Melissa used for punishment.
Door open.
Lights on.
Soap bubbles around her feet.
Lucy laughing because I slipped.
The room had become ordinary.
That was healing.
