Chapter 7 - MELISSA FINALLY EXPLAINED WHYI met Melissa only through lawyers for weeks.

Eventually, during a structured family proceeding, she spoke directly.
“I wanted out.”
I stared.
“You could have filed for divorce.”
“You would never let me take Lucy to California.”
She was right.
Not because I owned her.
Because Lucy lived here.
Her school.
Grandparents.
My work.
Her life.
A relocation would require discussion.
Melissa wanted certainty.
“So you built a case.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
She looked down.
“Of losing.”
There it was.
Not safety.
Loss.
She wanted the marriage over and wanted Lucy.
Not shared.
Not co-parented.
Hers.
She had convinced herself I would use money and stability to defeat her in court.
So she decided to arrive first with a story of abuse.
“Why hurt Lucy?”
“I didn’t think of it as hurting her.”
That was the problem.
“What did you think it was?”
“Preparation.”
I stared.
“You turned our daughter into a witness for a crime that never happened.”
Melissa started crying.
“I thought once we moved, she’d forget.”
