Chapter 10: The Memory Locked Away
The handwriting was mine.
I knew it.
I didn’t want to know it.
But I did.
The shape of every letter.
The sharp edges.
The way I crossed my T’s too high.
The way I pressed harder at the end of every sentence.
It was my handwriting.
My message.
My command.
*Daddy told me to hide.*
I stared at the drawing until the words blurred.
“No.””
The word came out like a breath.
Nobody moved.
Nobody tried to comfort me.
Because nobody knew how.
Even Zoe.
Especially Zoe.
She was looking at me differently now.
Not with fear.
With confusion.
Like she was trying to understand how the father she waited for could also be the person who told her to disappear.
I looked at Calvin.
“Tell me this isn’t real.””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
I turned toward Monique.
“You knew?””
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
“You knew something.””
“I knew you told her to hide.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Monique started crying.
“I didn’t know why.””
The room tilted.
I grabbed the edge of the table.
“You knew I did this?””
“Not like this.””
She wiped her face.
“Darius, after your accident, you changed.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
“You were scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at Zoe.
“Of losing her.””
The words made no sense.
I looked at the drawing again.
“My daughter was hiding from me.””
“No.””
Monique stepped closer.
“She was hiding because you thought you were protecting her.””
I shook my head.
“I would never hide my own child.””
“You don’t remember.””
That sentence again.
The one sentence that had followed me through every secret.
I hated it.
Because it was becoming the only explanation.
Calvin walked toward me.
“There are memories your mind buried.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because something happened.””
“What happened?””
He hesitated.
And I knew whatever came next was the truth everyone had been avoiding.
“Your father threatened Zoe.””
My hands curled into fists.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“And I let him?””
Calvin looked down.
“No.””
That one word stopped me.
“No?””
“You fought him.””
I stared.
“Then why the note?””
“Because after you fought him…”
Calvin paused.
“You made a choice.””
“What choice?””
He looked at Monique.
She whispered:
“You asked us to hide her.””
The room went silent.
I felt like I was falling.
“No.””
“You believed they would come back.””
“Who?””
“My father’s people.””
I looked around the hidden room.
At the drawings.
The letters.
The space where Zoe had spent years.
“So I put her here?””
Monique shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Nobody answered.
Then Zoe spoke.
“Someone else.””
Everyone looked at her.
The little girl stepped forward.
Her voice was quiet.
“He said Daddy would come back when it was safe.””
I crouched down.
“Who said that?””
She looked at Calvin.
Then at Monique.
Then at me.
“The man who watched me.””
My blood went cold.
“What man?””
She swallowed.
“He always wore a black coat.””
Calvin’s expression changed.
I noticed.
“You know him.””
Calvin looked away.
“Calvin.””
His jaw tightened.
“Yes.””
“Who is he?””
Before he could answer, the front door downstairs slammed.
Everyone froze.
Ava screamed.
Monique grabbed both girls.
I moved toward the hallway.
Every instinct told me to protect them.
Footsteps echoed from downstairs.
Slow.
Heavy.
Confident.
Someone wasn’t sneaking in.
Someone wanted us to know they were here.
Calvin whispered:
“He found us.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Then a voice called from the first floor.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow recognized.
“Darius.””
My body went still.
The voice continued.
“You finally remembered.””
I stepped toward the stairs.
Monique grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
May you like
Her face was filled with pure terror.
“Because that’s your father.””
