Chapter 13: The Truth I Chose to Forget
The phone slipped from my hand.
It hit the floor.
The sound was small.
But it felt like an explosion.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Because the voice on that recording had been mine.
Not a stranger.
Not a trick.
Me.
A version of myself who knew the truth and was so afraid of it that I begged someone to take it away.
I looked at Monique.
She was crying silently.
“You knew.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The word hurt more than I expected.
I turned away.
“You knew I asked you to erase my memory.””
“Yes.””
“And you let me live like this?””
She stepped closer.
“You asked me to.””
I looked back.
“You expect me to forgive that?””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“I don’t.””
That stopped me.
For years, I thought Monique was hiding because she didn’t care.
Because she wanted to protect herself.
But the pain on her face wasn’t the pain of someone who got caught.
It was the pain of someone who had been carrying something too heavy for too long.
“I hated myself every day,” she whispered.
I didn’t answer.
“I watched you look at Zoe and not know her.””
Her voice cracked.
“I watched her wait for you.””
Zoe stood in the doorway.
Listening.
I immediately looked at her.
“Zoe…”
She looked down.
“I always thought you forgot me because you didn’t love me.””
My chest tightened.
“No.””
I walked toward her.
“No, sweetheart.””
She looked up.
“Then why?””
I had no answer.
Because the truth was worse than forgetting.
I had chosen it.
Not because I didn’t love her.
Because I loved her so much that I thought forgetting was the only way to protect her.
But a child doesn’t understand that.
A child only understands absence.
I knelt down.
“I’m sorry.””
The words felt too small.
Too weak.
But they were all I had.
Zoe stared at me.
“You really told me to hide?””
I swallowed.
“I think I did.””
She looked hurt.
Not angry.
That was worse.
“I was waiting for you.””
I closed my eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“You don’t.””
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“You don’t know how many nights I thought you forgot because I wasn’t good enough.””
The words broke something inside me.
I pulled her into my arms.
And for the first time, she let me.
She was so small.
So light.
Like she could disappear again if I wasn’t careful.
Behind us, my father spoke.
“We need to leave.””
I turned.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m done running.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Darius.””
“No.””
I stood.
“I spent twenty years running from a truth I chose to bury.””
I looked at Calvin.
“I spent years trusting people who knew more about my life than I did.””
Then I looked at Monique.
“And I almost lost my daughter twice.””
Nobody spoke.
I looked at the phone.
“Tell me everything.””
My father stayed silent.
Then he nodded.
“After your accident, you discovered someone close to you was involved.””
“Who?””
He looked at Calvin.
Calvin looked away.
My stomach dropped.
“Calvin?””
He took a breath.
“I didn’t want this.””
“Answer me.””
He closed his eyes.
“The person who caused your accident…”
A pause.
“Was someone who worked for your family.””
I waited.
“Who?””
Calvin looked at me.
“It was me.””
The room went completely still.
Monique gasped.
My father stepped forward.
“You see?””
Calvin shook his head.
“No.””
I stared at him.
“You?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I was ordered to scare you.””
My hands curled into fists.
“Ordered by who?””
Calvin looked toward my father.
“My father.””
The room went silent.
I looked between them.
“What?””
Calvin swallowed.
“He wanted control over everything.””
My father’s face hardened.
“He manipulated everyone.””
Calvin laughed bitterly.
“You’re blaming me?””
“I’m blaming you because you followed orders.””
“I was young.””
“And Darius almost died.””
The truth hit me like a wave.
My father.
Calvin.
Monique.
Everyone connected.
Everyone carrying pieces.
Everyone leaving me with nothing.
I looked at Calvin.
“Why help Zoe?””
His face softened.
“Because I couldn’t undo what I did to you.””
He looked at the little girl.
“So I protected the one person who still needed someone.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
My father looked toward the window.
“No.””
“What?””
May you like
He whispered:
“He found us.””
