The Daughter Behind My Wall / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8: The Memory I Lost

I spent the next hour trying to convince myself the recording was fake.

A trick.

A manipulation.

Anything except the truth.

Because the alternative was impossible.

My own voice had warned me.

My own voice had told Calvin not to trust my wife.

And I didn’t remember saying it.

The police would have been the logical choice.

But how do you explain this?

“My wife hid my daughter inside a wall, a stranger has recordings of my forgotten memories, and someone may have erased my past.””

Nobody would believe it.

So I did the only thing I could.

I searched.

The hidden room became a graveyard of secrets.

Old photos.

Letters.

Drawings.

Documents.

Every piece felt like another piece of myself that had been stolen.

Calvin sat quietly near the doorway.

Monique stayed outside.

She wouldn’t come inside.

I noticed.

“Why won’t you enter?””

She looked at the room.

“I don’t deserve to.””

The answer surprised me.

I walked out.

“Then tell me what happened.””

She looked exhausted.

“I met you before you remember.””

“When?””

She took a breath.

“After your accident.””

I stared at her.

“So we didn’t meet the way you told me?””

“No.””

The confession came softly.

“We met because I was helping you recover.””

“Helping me?””

She nodded.

“You had no family nearby. You were alone.””

I looked at Calvin.

“And Zoe?””

Monique’s eyes filled.

“She was there.””

I waited.

“She was a baby.””

My chest tightened.

“She was your daughter.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you tell me we never had a child?””

Monique looked down.

“Because that’s what you believed.””

The words made me angry.

“You’re saying this was my fault?””

“No.””

She shook her head quickly.

“I’m saying someone made sure you believed it.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Again.

I grabbed the edge of the doorway.

“Monique.””

Her face changed.

“I don’t know everything.””

That surprised me.

“You don’t?””

“No.””

She looked toward Calvin.

“But he does.””

I turned.

Calvin stood slowly.

“I know pieces.””

“Then give me those pieces.””

He looked at Zoe.

“She was born into a fight she didn’t understand.””

“What fight?””

“A fight over money. Power. Control.””

I frowned.

“That sounds like something from a movie.””

Calvin shook his head.

“Your family had secrets.””

“My family?””

“Yes.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out another photograph.

This one showed three men.

One was Calvin.

One was younger version of me.

And one was someone I didn’t recognize.

“Who is that?””

Calvin’s face became cold.

“Your father.””

I stared.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

“What does he have to do with Zoe?””

Calvin looked at the picture.

“He knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That Zoe existed.””

My hands tightened.

“And?””

“He wanted her gone.””

The room went quiet.

Ava, who had been drawing quietly nearby, looked up.

“Why would someone want Zoe gone?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody wanted to say it.

But I already knew.

A child represented something.

A secret.

A threat.

A truth someone wanted buried.

I looked at Monique.

“Did my father do this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

That answer wasn’t enough.

“Then who?””

Suddenly, Zoe spoke.

Her voice was barely audible.

“The man.””

Everyone turned.

“What man?””

She looked toward the wall.

“The one who brought me here.””

Calvin went still.

“You remember him?””

Zoe nodded.

“What did he look like?””

The little girl hugged herself.

“He looked like you.””

My stomach dropped.

“Me?””

She nodded.

“Same eyes.””

The room went silent.

Then she whispered:

“He told me he was my grandfather.””

I looked at Calvin.

Then Monique.

Then the old photographs.

And suddenly, a horrifying thought entered my mind.

The person who hid Zoe wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone connected to me.

Someone who shared my blood.

Someone who knew exactly where to hide a child.

And then Calvin said something that made my entire body freeze.

“Darius…”

May you like

He looked at me.

“Your father may still be alive.””
