The Daughter Behind My Wall / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5: The Room Behind the Room

I didn’t sleep that night.

Nobody did.

The bedroom that had always been a place of comfort became a crime scene in my mind.

Every toy on the floor.

Every family photo.

Every crack in the wall.

Everything looked different.

Because now I knew something had been hidden from me.

Not in another city.

Not in another house.

Inside my own home.

I sat on the edge of the bed while Ava slept in the guest room beside Monique.

Zoe refused to leave my side.

She was curled up under a blanket on the couch, holding onto a stuffed animal Ava had given her.

She looked so small.

Too small for the nightmare she had lived through.

Calvin stood near the window.

Watching.

Waiting.

“You’re not leaving, are you?””

He looked at me.

“Not yet.””

I hated that answer.

“Why?””

“Because the truth isn’t finished.””

I stared at him.

“I’m tired of people saying that.””

He didn’t respond.

A few seconds passed.

Then I asked the question that had been destroying me.

“Is Zoe really my daughter?””

Calvin looked at her.

“Yes.””

“How do you know?””

His expression changed.

“Because I was there.””

My chest tightened.

“Where?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Not here.””

“Then where?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation told me something.

Whatever happened wasn’t just a secret.

It was something dangerous.

“You need to ask Monique about the night Zoe was born.””

I stood.

“Monique said we never had another child.””

Calvin looked at me.

“She didn’t say that because it was true.””

I walked into the hallway.

Monique was sitting on the floor outside the guest room.

She looked exhausted.

Like she had aged years overnight.

“You knew.””

She looked up.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“How long?””

She swallowed.

“Since before we got married.””

The words felt impossible.

I leaned against the wall.

“You knew about Zoe before you married me?””

Monique nodded slowly.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She started crying.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Twenty years later?””

She looked away.

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But underneath it was something worse.

Grief.

For a daughter I should have known.

For memories I never got to have.

For birthdays missed.

For bedtime stories never read.

“Why?””

Monique covered her face.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Again?””

She looked at me.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

She took a shaky breath.

“The night Zoe was born, something happened.””

“What?””

Her voice became smaller.

“She wasn’t supposed to survive.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She was sick.””

Monique looked toward the room where Zoe was sleeping.

“There were complications.””

My heart hurt.

“You told me we lost a baby.””

She nodded.

“I thought I had.””

The hallway went silent.

“Then why is she alive?””

Monique looked down.

“Because someone took her.””

The answer felt like a door opening.

A terrible one.

“Who?””

Before she could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The entire house fell into darkness.

Ava screamed from the guest room.

I ran instantly.

“Daddy!””

I found her standing on the bed.

Monique rushed behind me.

“It’s okay.””

But then I heard it.

A sound.

From the bedroom.

From the wall.

A faint scratching.

Everyone stopped.

Zoe appeared in the doorway.

Her face had gone white.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pointed toward the closet.

“He’s back.””

My body went cold.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

The scratching grew louder.

Then something hit the wooden panel from inside.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Monique grabbed my arm.

“Darius, don’t open it.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She whispered:

“Because that’s not where Zoe was kept.””

The room froze.

I stared at the wall.

At the hidden space behind it.

“What are you saying?””

Monique stepped backward.

“There’s another room.””

The wooden panel cracked.

And from the darkness behind it…

May you like

A voice whispered my name.

“Darius.””
