Chapter 12: The Betrayal Revealed
The room went silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone heard what my father said.
*The person you trusted most.*
My mind immediately went to Monique.
The woman who had lied.
The woman who had hidden my daughter.
The woman who knew more than she admitted.
But then I saw her face.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t guilty.
She looked terrified.
Like she already knew who he meant.
“Who?””
My voice was barely controlled.
My father didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
He looked at Calvin.
Everyone turned.
Calvin’s face changed.
“No.””
The word escaped him.
My stomach dropped.
“Calvin?””
He stepped backward.
“Don’t listen to him.””
My father laughed quietly.
“Still protecting him?””
I looked between them.
“What is happening?””
Calvin looked at me.
“I was trying to help you.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the first time I saw fear in him.
Not sadness.
Not anger.
Fear.
My father spoke.
“Calvin wasn’t supposed to find Zoe.””
Calvin shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
My father looked at him.
“You were supposed to keep the secret buried.””
I stared at Calvin.
“Is that true?””
He looked down.
A painful silence followed.
Then he said:
“Yes.””
My heart sank.
“But not for the reason you think.””
“Then what reason?””
Calvin looked at Zoe.
“I was protecting her.””
“From who?””
He didn’t answer.
My father did.
“From himself.””
I froze.
“What?””
Calvin closed his eyes.
My father continued.
“Darius, you don’t remember what happened after the accident.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me.””
He took a breath.
“You woke up terrified.””
“Why?””
“Because you remembered someone trying to take Zoe.””
My chest tightened.
“But not who.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Because your memory was damaged.””
I shook my head.
“Then why did I write that note?””
My father’s expression changed.
“Because you were trying to leave yourself a warning.””
I looked at the note.
The drawing.
The hidden room.
“What warning?””
My father stepped closer.
“You knew someone would manipulate your memories.””
The house became silent.
I felt cold.
“Someone erased my memory?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Zoe whispered:
“Mommy.””
Everyone turned.
Monique froze.
“No.””
Zoe started crying.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Why would you say that?””
She wiped her face.
“Because I heard them arguing.””
“Who?””
She looked at Monique.
“And the man who came at night.””
Monique’s face went pale.
“Zoe…”
“He told Mommy she had to keep pretending.””
My heart pounded.
I turned toward Monique.
“Who was he?””
She covered her mouth.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Not even her.
Then the lights flickered.
Again.
Everyone froze.
A sound came from upstairs.
A phone ringing.
I looked toward the bedroom.
My bedroom.
The one where all of this began.
No one moved.
Then my father whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He stared upstairs.
“Because that phone hasn’t existed for twenty years.””
The ringing continued.
Slow.
Steady.
Waiting.
I walked upstairs.
Everyone followed.
The phone sat on the old nightstand.
A phone I had never seen before.
A phone that looked ancient.
I picked it up.
For a moment, there was only static.
Then a voice.
My own voice.
Older.
Tired.
Terrified.
“Darius…”
I stopped breathing.
The recording continued.
“If you’re hearing this, then you found Zoe.””
My hand shook.
Everyone listened.
My voice whispered:
“And if you found Zoe…”
A pause.
Then:
“Monique already knows the truth.””
I looked at my wife.
She started crying.
The recording continued.
“She knows why I made her promise never to tell you.””
Silence.
Then my own voice said:
“Because I was the one who asked her to erase my memory.””
My knees almost gave out.
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
And the final words came through the speaker.
“I asked her to make me forget…”
A pause.
A breath.

Then:
“Because I was afraid of what I would do when I remembered who betrayed me.””
