The Daughter Behind My Wall / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6: The Truth in the Dark

I should have walked away.

Every instinct in my body told me to.

A hidden child.

A stranger inside my wall.

A wife who had lied to me for decades.

Every normal person would have called the police.

But this wasn’t normal.

Nothing about my family was normal anymore.

I reached for the panel.

Monique grabbed my wrist.

“Please.””

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please don’t make me lose you.””

I pulled my hand away.

“You already lost me the moment you decided I didn’t deserve the truth.””

Her face collapsed.

I hated seeing her hurt.

But I hated not knowing more.

I pulled the panel open.

Behind it was another narrow passage.

Not the same cavity where Zoe had been found.

A deeper space.

Older.

The walls were unfinished.

The air smelled like dust and old wood.

Calvin moved closer.

“You weren’t supposed to find this yet.””

I looked back.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped inside.

The flashlight on my phone barely reached the end.

Then I saw something.

A small chair.

A blanket.

A stack of old drawings.

My heart sank.

Because the drawings weren’t random.

They were pictures of a family.

A father.

A mother.

Two daughters.

And every picture had the same thing written at the bottom.

“Waiting for Daddy.””

I picked one up.

My hands started shaking.

Zoe stood behind me.

“That’s mine.””

I turned.

“You drew these?””

She nodded.

“I thought if I made enough pictures, you would find me.””

The words almost broke me.

I looked away.

Because I couldn’t let her see me cry.

Not then.

Not while I was supposed to be protecting her.

Then I noticed something else.

A small box in the corner.

I opened it.

Inside were letters.

Hundreds of them.

All addressed to me.

Darius.

My hands went numb.

I grabbed the first envelope.

The handwriting was childish.

But the words weren’t.

“Dear Daddy, today I learned how to read…”

I opened another.

“Dear Daddy, I had my first day of school…”

Another.

“Dear Daddy, I’m sorry you don’t know me yet…”

I couldn’t breathe.

These weren’t old letters from a stranger.

They were from my daughter.

A daughter who had been waiting for me.

A daughter who believed I abandoned her.

I turned around slowly.

Monique was standing at the entrance.

Crying.

“You knew.””

She nodded.

“I knew she wrote them.””

“How?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I read every single one.””

I stared at her.

“You read my daughter’s letters to me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shouted.

“No!””

The sound echoed through the hidden room.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Monique covered her face.

For once, she didn’t argue.

Because she knew.

She knew I was right.

Then Calvin spoke from behind her.

“She wasn’t the one who put Zoe there.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“Monique made choices. Terrible ones. But she wasn’t the person who built this place.””

My anger shifted.

“Then who did?””

Calvin looked at the letters.

Then at Zoe.

His expression became heavy.

“The same person who took her.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Who?””

Before he could answer, Zoe suddenly grabbed my arm.

Her eyes were fixed on something behind me.

A small piece of wood hanging from the wall.

A piece I hadn’t noticed.

“What is that?””

I turned.

Carved into the wood were three words.

Three words that made Monique scream.

“Darius…”

I stepped closer.

The carving was old.

Deep.

Permanent.

And it wasn’t a message.

It was a warning.

Because beneath the words was a name.

A name I recognized.

My own.

May you like

And under it:

*“I know what you did.””*
