Chapter 7: The Name on the Wall
The words carved into the wood stared back at me.
*I KNOW WHAT YOU DID.*
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The hidden room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
And the strangest part wasn’t the message itself.
It was the name beneath it.
Mine.
“Darius…”
Monique’s voice trembled.
I turned slowly.
“What does that mean?””
She looked away.
That was becoming her answer for everything.
Silence.
Fear.
Regret.
I stepped toward her.
“No more.””
She looked at me.
“No more what?””
“No more looking away.””
My voice echoed through the hidden room.
“No more crying without explaining. No more saying you were protecting me. No more secrets.””
Zoe stood behind me, holding onto my shirt.
Ava was still in the hallway with Calvin, watching through the open panel.
I looked at the carving again.
Someone had spent time creating it.
Someone wanted me to find it.
Someone wanted me to know.
“What did I do?””
Nobody answered.
Then Calvin spoke.
“You don’t remember.””
I turned toward him.
“I’m tired of hearing that.””
“I know.””
“Then stop saying it.””
His expression softened.
“Because the truth is worse.””
I clenched my jaw.
“Tell me.””
Calvin walked closer to the carving.
“When Zoe was born, there was a decision made.””
“By who?””
His eyes moved toward Monique.
“By everyone who thought they knew what was best.””
Monique shook her head.
“No.””
Calvin ignored her.
“You weren’t supposed to remember.””
The room went silent.
“What are you talking about?””
He looked at me.
“Twenty years ago, you were in an accident.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“I was?””
Monique’s face changed.
A tiny movement.
But I saw it.
She knew.
“You never told me that.””
She swallowed.
“I didn’t know how.””
“When?””
“Before we got married.””
I stared at her.
“My accident happened before we met?””
“Yes.””
I laughed quietly.
A cold, empty laugh.
“So now I find out I had a daughter, my wife lied to me, and apparently I lost my memory?””
Calvin nodded.
“Not all of it.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the wall.
“It means someone helped you forget.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
“Someone?””
Calvin didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“Your family.””
I froze.
“My family?””
“My parents. People close to you.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I wanted to reject it.
I needed to reject it.
Because my entire life was already falling apart.
I couldn’t lose the memories too.
But then I saw Monique.
She wasn’t shocked.
She wasn’t confused.
She was terrified.
“Monique.””
She looked at me.
“Tell me he’s lying.””
Her lips trembled.
“I can’t.””
That answer hurt more than the truth.
I stepped back.
“Why?””
She started crying.
“Because after the accident, you didn’t remember Zoe.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“You remembered me. You remembered your life. But there were gaps.””
She looked toward the hidden room.
“Important gaps.””
I stared at Zoe.
A little girl who had spent years waiting for a father who didn’t know she existed.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Monique whispered:
“Because every time I tried…”
She stopped.
“Every time you got close to remembering, something happened.””
“What happened?””
Her eyes moved toward Calvin.
“He came back.””
I looked at him.
“You?””
Calvin nodded.
“I was trying to expose the truth.””
“Then why hide?””
“I wasn’t hiding from you.””
His expression hardened.
“I was hiding from the people who wanted Zoe gone.””
The hallway became silent.
Ava stepped closer.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned.
Her small voice reminded me there were still children in this nightmare.
I walked toward her.
“It’s okay.””
But she looked at the hidden room.
“Is Zoe staying?””
I looked at Zoe.
The answer should have been simple.
Of course she was staying.
But everything in my life had become complicated.
“Yes,” I said.
“She’s staying.””
Zoe looked at me.
A tiny smile appeared.
The first one I had seen.
Then Calvin’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“Who is it?””
He didn’t answer.
The phone rang again.
This time, I heard the sound clearly.
A recording played automatically.
A voice.
Old.
Distorted.
But familiar.
My own voice.
“Calvin…”
Everyone stared.
The recording continued.
“If you found her…”
A pause.
Then my voice whispered:
“Don’t trust Monique.””
My blood turned cold.
Monique covered her mouth.
“No.””
The recording ended.
I looked at my wife.
May you like
And for the first time…
I wondered if the person I needed to fear was standing right in front of me.
