The Daughter Behind My Wall / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14: The Last Secret

The front lights swept across the windows.

A car had stopped outside.

Nobody moved.

The house became silent except for the sound of our breathing.

My father’s face had changed.

For the first time since he arrived, he looked afraid.

“Who is it?””

I asked.

He didn’t answer.

That terrified me more.

Monique moved the girls behind her.

Calvin stepped toward the door.

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.””

“Neither do you.””

His eyes met mine.

And for a second, I saw the guilt.

The same guilt I had seen in Monique.

Everyone in this house had been running from something.

Except me.

Because I had forgotten.

A knock came.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Then a voice.

“Darius.””

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that voice.

Not from memory.

From somewhere deeper.

Somewhere my body remembered.

My father whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You know him.””

He didn’t answer.

The door opened.

And a man stepped inside.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

He looked around the room.

At the broken walls.

At the hidden spaces.

At the family standing together.

Then he smiled.

“Finally.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

“You really don’t remember.””

I hated those words.

“I’m asking you a question.””

The man sighed.

“My name is Victor.””

Nobody reacted.

Except Calvin.

His face went pale.

“Victor…”

The man smiled.

“You remember me.””

I stepped forward.

“What did you do?””

Victor looked around.

“I gave your family what they wanted.””

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Monique.

“She wanted Zoe safe.””

Then at my father.

“He wanted control.””

Then at Calvin.

“He wanted forgiveness.””

Finally, he looked at me.

“And you wanted peace.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did you do to my memory?””

Victor tilted his head.

“You asked me to help.””

The room exploded.

“No.””

Monique shook her head.

“He’s lying.””

Victor smiled.

“Am I?””

I looked at Monique.

She didn’t know.

And that scared me.

Because for the first time, she looked uncertain.

Victor continued.

“After the accident, you discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That Zoe was never the only child.””

Silence.

I stared.

“What?””

Victor smiled.

“You thought this was about one daughter?””

My father stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Victor ignored him.

“You had another secret.””

I felt sick.

Another?

I looked at Monique.

She looked terrified.

“Darius…”

“What is he talking about?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Victor laughed softly.

“You really don’t remember.””

I stepped closer.

“Explain.””

He looked at Zoe.

Then at Ava.

My heart stopped.

No.

Not Ava.

“Don’t.””

Victor smiled.

“Your family history is complicated.””

My father’s voice became sharp.

“Leave.””

Victor looked at him.

“You don’t get to order me anymore.””

Then he reached into his coat.

He pulled out a document.

A birth record.

He placed it on the table.

I stared at it.

Because I recognized the hospital name.

The date.

The signatures.

But the name on the document made my world stop.

Ava.

My daughter.

Victor looked at me.

“Zoe wasn’t the only child hidden from you.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“No.””

Monique grabbed the paper.

Her hands shook.

“This isn’t possible.””

Victor leaned closer.

“Isn’t it?””

I looked at my two daughters.

Zoe.

Ava.

Two little girls.

Two secrets.

Two lives connected to a past I couldn’t remember.

Then Victor whispered:

“Your memory was erased because you discovered the truth about both of them.””

The room went silent.

And for the first time…

May you like

I wondered if forgetting had saved me.

Or if it had protected the people who hurt me.
